2016 Optima Climate Control Issues

I purchased a 2016 Optima SXL in September. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I started noticing that there was an intermittent issue with teh climate control issue. When the issue occurs, my car would stop circulating air within the cabin. The Auto feature, which had not been previously turned on at all, would be the only mode available. If I try to change modes and then turn on the circulating air function again, the circulating air function would not turn on and the mode would start flashing "auto". This is despite the auto feature being turned off. No matter which mode I select, and even when the front vent option is OFF - circulation within the cabin is not possible and I lose the control to change any settings.

Another note: when this happens, my front window still steams up, indicating that the front vents are not on, despite the Auto notice flashing that shows that front vents are in use.

Additionally - the pressure of the air seems to fluctuate randomly and quickly - and the car seems to cycle through various modes (different vents operating randomly at different times in quick intervals).

My car spent the better part of November and December at the Service department and went through various fixes. The dealer finally traded me for a new 2016 Optima. I took delivery of this yesterday. The car has 168 miles. It operated fine yesterday but part way through my morning commute the issue started happening in the new car as well.

Anyone dealt with this?

Hi LauraB. I have a 2014 Kia Rondo (not available in the States) that has done the exact same thing (with the exception of the front window fogging up) since I bought it. It too has been back in for service and no one can figure out exactly what is going on.

This may or may not have something to do with your problem. I'm pretty sure that our issues stem from the auto-defogging system. If it senses moisture in the car, it activiates automatically because that is what it is set-up to do from the factory. It's aggravating and frustrating - it's like the auto climate control has absolute power over anything to do with heating irrespective of if you've engaged the auto climate function or not.

There is the ability to turn off the auto-defogging on my car by hitting the front defroster button 4 times within 2 seconds while holding the "auto" button. Yours probably has it too although your process could be different - check your manual under auto defogging system. When I do this, my climate control (which I always leave on manual) works as it should. Please note that if the battery is disconnected, the car will revert back to auto defogging mode and you'll have to cancel it again.

Hope this helps.

I think I know what might be happening...

Could you please take a picture of it? I am confused as to what exactly is happening.

Maybe even a video...

I presume we deal with autodefogging feature that will override whatever settings you had on previously.

All - thank you so much for the tip on auto defogging. The dealership told me that according to my VIN I do not have this featire in my SXL...but upon further research I am convinced that this must be the problem. I am going to research it further and try the manual shut down to see if that helps...

Look behind your rear view mirror. On the windshield you should have a small piece of slotted cover. It houses the moisture sensor.
Section 4 page 150 or 237 in PDF in your owners manual describes the process. Also, it shows picture of the sensor.

Look in there and tell me if this is what is happening.

From what I am reading from your story - you deal with it after driving for a while with recalculation on. It adds humidity and the sensor will pick it up. When it does, it overrides everything else. You can switch it back, and it will be blinking and will go back it what it thinks is the best.
I had to deal with it as well.

Now, if you have SXL it is equipped with you must have automatic climate control. If so, it is unlikely to NOT have defogging...
Only the two basic versions do not have auto climate.

Solution - deactivate logic and defogging.
Tell the dealer to follow deactivation of the systems on these pages:

4-149
4-151

This should solve your problem and now you can control the system yourself.

All,

I looked behind my rear view mirror and found the auto-defogging sensor. Yesterday, I was able to successfully turn off the Auto Defogging system. My climate control system is now under my control. I am so glad I posted and so grateful for your insights! Thanks again!

so I am afraid the issue was exactly same in your previous car...

However, I am surprised, OK not so much..., that the techs could not solve this issue. I guess they were not listening... what is very common.
As you see, @kiarondo was also on good track. Just from the start.

Thanks for the feedback LauraB! and thanks for the shout out PLP! So many people post something and get a reply, but then never come back to say what the actual outcome was. Your experience confirms what I've suspected for a while now. Pretty crazy that we had to figure it out for ourselves though. So you got a new vehicle and I got a new heater control system, when our vehicles were doing what they were set up to do from the factory .
