Unhappy 2011 Kia Sportage Air Conditioner Smell

Hi all,

Since I got my 2011 Kia Sportage in November 2010, I found theat when I accelerate on hills, over-take – basically when the RPM goes above 3500, I get this oily smell from the Air Con ducts. The smell only lingers for a while, and when RPM goes to normal, the smell goes away. Initially I thought this was because the car was new, but I have driven more than 9000KM, and still have this problem. The Air Con is a manual type, so no chance of vents opening. Anyone else has the same problem?

The AC compressor cuts out for better acceleration, then cuts back on when you ease up on the throttle. You will get sort of a 'stale' smell momentarily before the air gets cold again. Check your oil and look for oil leaks - you may be getting an engine oil smell in the cabin, but it's most likely just what I said. Also change your cabin air filter if you haven't already.

Also try an anti-bacterial spray (Glen 20, etc.). Make sure it is an anti-bacterial spray, not just a sweet smelling deodoriser.
Run the air-cond on recirculate and spray a liberal amount up under the passenger footwell (where the cabin air is dragged from) and leave it running for a while to help circulate the spray through the hidden air ducts and filter. I do this on a regular basis and have never had a problem since I was tuned into this idea. Much cheaper and better than getting your service centre to do a air-cond system clean (truth be known, they probably perform a very similar function, but may change the cabin filter too).
Filter shouldn't need changing just yet, I would have thought, but worth a try if the smell persists.

Thanks guys. Wil try the anti bacterial spray on both my cars and also recommend to my mates here in Fiji.

For the AC Smell, guess it is due to what 1saxman said. Drive slowly???

Cheers.

One of the biggest offenders for air-cond smells . . . . cigarettes. Don't smoke in the car!

its good to know the compressor cuts during acceleration, my old car didn't have this feature and used to die uphill with the AC on, kia is awesome

Thanks guys. One thing, the car was bought in November last year, and this problem has been there from the begining. I must admit that I have a sensitive nose, so am able to "smell" this during times when I am going fast. Also dont smoke in the car.Thinking tha will get the dealer to have a look at the AC and check for leaks - maybe they overfilled the gas/oil. Thanks.

Im also experiencing this on my 2011 Sportage SLi. It generally happens when recirculate is turned on. It is a strange plastic/metal burning smell. Quite unpleasant but intermittant. Mgiht have to get it checked out if others are experiencing the same thing.

Technical Service Bulletin
NUMBER 016 [Rev 1, 7/21/11] DATE July 2011
AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM DEODORIZER TREATMENT
Quote:
This bulletin provides information about an available deodorizer treatment for the climate
control system. Air Conditioning systems may at times emit a stale or musty odor from
the vents. Typically, this is most noticeable directly after vehicle start up, and is related
to bacterial growth on the evaporator core. Growth of such bacteria and the resulting
generation of the A/C related odors is dependent on several factors, including but not
limited to vehicle operating environment, length and frequency of A/C system use etc.
and is more frequently observed in higher humidity and higher ambient temperature areas.
To assist in addressing these concerns, a two part deodorizer kit is available via Kia’s
Chemical Program.

Sharing experiences is one of the goals of a forum, which is my idea of a forum.
There are no stupid questions, but anyone can give a answer.

That kia (kit) for the A/C works GREAT. I stock it, and most kia dealers should as well.
