Default Rear window wiper blade replacement

After noticing today that the rear window wiper blade on my 2011 Sportage EX was partially torn, I promptly paid a visit to my dealer's parts department. I asked for a replacement blade. This part includes the 12 inch rubber blade, stainless steel 'stiffeners' and plastic/composite housing. The price I was quoted was $64.00 CDN. $64.00 for a Kia wiper blade replacement?

A quick trip to Canadian Tire and $11.99 bought me a Motomaster Precise Fit 12" blade and integrated housing. Five minutes of fiddling to slide the squeegee portion (taken from the new blade) into the slot of the original Kia housing (the aftermarket housing didn't fit on the Kia wiper arm) and I was good to go.

I have purchased a replacement rear wiper blade for my 2011 Sportage from the dealer but I am not sure how the blade on the back is removed. I have tried pushing in and also pulling on what appears to be the tab underneath the blade. I do not want to force it without being sure of what I should be doing. Can anyone who has changed their rear blade help on this ?

Okay, go to your manual and it is explained. Basically the blade pops out of the arm without any kind of a release mechanism. Lift the arm up off the glass and grab the lower half of the blade, pulling it out and up. Be sure to support the arm to keep any pressure off it while you pop out the blade assembly. It also is possible to replace just the rubber insert as marshboy did, but you'll find that easier if you remove the blade from the arm first. The stainless steel ribs don't have to be captured by the ends of the insert (like the original insert) as long as the tab on each end of the blade remains intact. You can use a generic insert replacement of the correct type, cut it to length, hold the ribs in place and thread it into the blade. Once it's installed, the ribs can't get past the end tabs so the wiper works normally. However, I would consider this sort of a makeshift or emergency repair since it's not really worth it to avoid paying $28 for a blade, which is my dealer's price. I bought my blade from a guy in Korea on ebay for $19.00 including postage. Got the blade faster than I expected and it is definitely a genuine part.

Thanks saxman. The rear wiper blade assembly snaps out as you say. I would not have figured that one out. I do not change the rear blade as often as the front so I will stay with the dealer OEM replacement in the future even though it is a little pricy. Thanks again.

Default love these forums

I probably would have gone to the dealer and paid 64 bucks if not for this forum. thanks to marshboy for the tip. I too went to Canadian Tire and spent 11.99 on a replacement blade. Took all of 8 seconds to fit the new blade. Everythings comin' up Milhouse! thanks again.

To replace my rear wiper, I went to a local store grabbed a regular wiper $6 or something. Pulled the rubber off the old wiper, cut the new wiper blade rubber to the same size and placed the old metal inserts and slide the new rubber wiper insert into old wiper frame. Really easy fix.
