^^ that there

the things that are different running 95 in my car, and i'm very perceptive of little changes in everything, not just cars.. i'm annoying like that

1.) Better throttle response
2.) Less exhaust drone
3.) Zero pinging 2000rpm and up where it does on 91
4.) Economy gauge is exactly the same as manual calculation (was 1L/100 out on 91)

That alone hints at either:
a) ECU jumping to a 95/98 map
b) as Eli said and i agree, our fuel causing the knock sensors to retard the timing on 91, thus improved 'performance' on 95 and up
c) possible fault with our knock sensors but very unlikely

as i've said before, australia has some crap fuel in general, and the compression ratio on the 1.6 is just high enough to encounter issues in my opinion

95RON on average costs about $3 more per tank, so who cares. Not much of a cost for better drivability and a non lunched engine.

Also guys some are still confusing AKI with RON.. big difference there!

As Mouse said, peace.

In Thailand, the government encourage citizen to use E20 fuel (a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline 95). The dealer also recommend customers to use E20 and still have 5 years warranty. I have been running E20 in my Kia RIO 1.4 petrol for 4 months without any problem and still can do 5.8l/100km on highway and 10l/100km in city.
E20 is about 32 Baht/l, Gasohol 95 (E10) is about 37 Baht/l, I save 5 Baht/l. (1USD=30 Baht)

That comes across as quite an annoying comment to be honest.

Those of us whose neurones don't have a hard-wired connection to the ECM could still pick up the differences you mention. Sounds like there's a problem with your car if it won't run on 91.

you'd be surprised.. many people wouldn't know if their backside was on fire.

and yes it's a problem for sure and i'm not alone in that regard. Problem is, the dealers claim ignorance regarding the pinging and say 'haven't heard of that before' when it's been doing the rounds for some time now. They ask me to put 91RON in and bring it around so they can test it, and while the engine is indeed under warranty and they're asking me to do it, my level of mechanical sympathy doesn't allow it!

It says specifically in my car manual to not run any fuel that has a higher than 10% ethanol content.
I popped in my K&N this morning and didn't notice a bit of difference. Maybe I need to turn off the traction control though :-p

In case anyone cares--after installing a K&N air filter, my MPG dropped by 2-3
