gregs, i agree with you for the most part. up to last night, when i would use the button, i could not ebrake the car easily. it would always fight me, acting like a force that would not let me spin the car. after disablign my clutch switch again, the car was "normal" allowing me to toss the car how i pleased. there has to be some part of electronic bullshit going on even though the button is disabled.

i am going out shortly to test some other theories.

I think you've got it backwards. Since the button is labelled "ESC" I would suspect that it would disable ESC, not traction control. The clutch switch (whatever that is, I have the auto) MAY be disabling traction control. And yes there IS some electronic bullshit going on even tho the button is disabled because the button only disables ESC. However, to get a definitive answer I suggest contacting KIA and see what they say.

mebbie i am just old, and have been in the automotive business for over 20 years, and have seen these systems appear from nothing. imho:

traction control- system that stops or allows you to rotate the drive wheels in relation to the other wheels. kinda like an abs for acceleration.

stability control- system that grabs this or that brake to protect you from yourself or whatever the engineers see fit.

mebbie the koreans got it backwords?

*EDIT* after reviewing my manual, my rio does not have traction control. it is ESC, electronic stability control. i guess i was using the generic term traction control. doesn't matter, system still sucks.

*EDIT2* rio has esc and vsm. esc is the generic traction control, vsm is the the generic stability control. vsm deactivates when disabling the clutch switch, thus allowing the car to be normal. again, system sucks.

they won't give me a proper answer. i will get someone to tells me to leave the car alone, because that is not the way kia engineers intended it to operate. engineers are programming systems that eliminate basic driving skills. we are engineering driving out of the equation. like that latest accord commercial that warns the driver if someone stops in front of them... retarded. i guess this is good if you are texting....

Agreed!

All ESC and TC systems are not created equal. A lot of conflicting facts (thoughts) on this post...

I don't know about the clutch switch operation, but the button on my dash disables the traction control.
With the switch activated and the dash warning light on I can FRY my front tires with the e-brake locking the rear tires. Nice big clouds of tire smoke lol... I'm sure it's not good for my car, but it is fun. I wonder how long these clutches last.

When I first got this car I babied it and got 38.5 mpg average, now I pound on the thing and have fun and still get over 30. My son didn't believe that it would go 90mph in third gear, but it does... It'll max out in 5th gear at a touch over 120 on this nice gentle downhill road on my commute. 6th doesn't pull, it's just an overdrive.

Whenever I see someone smoking their tires I don't see any smoke at all. What I see is little dollar signs filling the air. I haven't smoked my tires since I was in high school. I learned quickly that I didn't like shelling out money to replace tires thanks to a 5 second thrill.

personally, i run my kia like mr. ranger. i am on my third set of tires in 24,000 miles, and they are fairly cheap. i have a good sized commute, and like to have fun while driving it. there is a big difference in the fun factor between 40mpg and mid thirties, and i prefer to have a blast. if you are counting every penny, then it must be a boring life... the kia is proving to be a good little sh!tbox.

FYI - 5 seconds won't ruin your tires...

I won't buy a vehicle that I can't have at least SOME fun in. That's why I went with the manual transmission. When I bought this car it was for the purpose of daily commuting, and it serves well in that role, but it is also fun. I didn't have to buy a kia rio, I can afford (and have) powerful vehicles. Burning the tires a few times in my rio is MUCH cheaper than doing the same thing with my Grand National. Since it's too cold out to ride the motorcycle, this is the most affordable option...lol.

I guess things are different in Surrey, eh?
