Your mileage is similar to what I am getting.... i have attached a spreadsheet of the actual L/100km vs. what the trip computer said. Obviously the trip computer is a bit optimistic...
So while I do agree that this is no "fuel sipper" of a car, it looks like you are getting what you should... You can't use the kia canada fuel numbers as they are not indicative of "real" driving conditions, the USA ones are much closer, and they indicated that you should expect 8.4 city, and 6.5 hwy.
I sit in crazy traffic for about 1.5 hours/day, so I'm actually pretty much right on for city driving. You can see that I did about 4000 km's of highway in the middle of my chart, there I actually beat 6.5 about 6 times! That was flat highway, hardly any wind, cruise set at 100 km/hr.
So it looks like you are likely getting what you should.... I would recommend tracking the actual mileage using an app like roadtrip or something similar to see what you are actually getting (since computer can't be trusted), but from the sounds of your km's driven on a tank, you are pretty in line with what I am getting.
There is no doubt that I was expecting the be getting a super fuel efficient car (which I wouldn't consider 8.4 city to be) but you really can't do all that much better without having a hybrid system, especially for city. I think our highway mileage is actually pretty decent.
edit: you can also see that running the car in, has had little if any effect on the mileage, I am now at 12,000 km's on the odometer.
