I just completed my first oil change on my 2012 Rio 5. I spent more time making sure I was jacking at the proper points than I did changing the oil. I am using a dealer filter. It helps when there is a warantee problem. It cost less than $1.00 more than the Fram filter. The dealer filter has a reverse flow valve that prevents the oil from leaving the filter after the engine is turned off. This prevents dry starts. I don't want to give the dealership any excuse to void my warranty.

I'm with you Galvyank on the warranty issue. The other bad thing is the Kia service info pretty much says if you ever take short trips, drive in hilly areas, or hot/cold weather, you need to follow the severe service schedule. If Kia wanted to be cranky they could probably deny warranty coverage even if you had proof of changes every 7500 miles/12 months.

Because the 1.6 GDI is an all new and relatively unproven engine, and because some other manufactures have had very expensive problems with their new Direct Injection engines, I think it's best to not risk the warranty and stick with 3750/6 months.

I used to change oil/filter every 3000 miles. When I went to synthetics I started a 5000 mile oil/filter change. To give you an ides of how long I have been using synthetics I used to buy Amisoil full synthetic from the local fire department. They were to only local people using synthetics. I knew the Chief. I have owned 50+ cars since then. All used synthetic oil. Not one of them ever had an engine problem. When I questioned Kia about why the do not recommend synthetics I got an illogical answer. I asked what the difference was between the European and US 1.6 engine. I was told none. I then reminded them that only synthetics are sold in Europe.

did my first oil change. drain plug and filter were on with a million foot pounds of force... as far as oil changes go, this one by far is one of the easiest i have ever done.

i kinda thought it would be an easy change once i saw where the filter was located along with nothing to remove to get to it.

does anyone know if the '10 Elantra oil filter would fit the 3G Rio?
i traded the Elantra in for the Rio and have a few filters left.

'10 Elantra = traded in 4^
'02 Rio = blew up.

When you purchase an oil filter for the 2012 1.6L from the Kia dealer the carton is marked Hyundai.
