Default No Compact Spare Tire

As you probably guessed, I am a new Kia owner with a lot of questions.
2012 Rio 5 SX with tire pressure monitors. Unless you option this car with a compact spare you will only get a powered air pump with a gage. and a can of puncture sealant. As a retired service center owner I remember that we were advised to tell customers not to use puncture sealant on tires with pressure monitors. The claim was that the sealant will destroy the valve stem pressure monitor. We never liked the sealant as we also thought that it affects the tire balance, especially when the car sits for a long time. We suggested carrying a plug kit and pump.

I'm planning to get a spare, too.
Not very comfortable with the whole puncture kit thing. It's a very urban solution.

I have the new Rio sedan. No spare. People didn't believe me when I told them it doesn't come with one. Your dealer will sell you one for about $300 ($140 for the rim & $160 for the tire if I remember right).

However, the 2012's keep the same 4x100 lug pattern as the old Rios and many other cars. The 15 inch compact rims are easy to find in junk yards, and only cost ~$50 for rim w/ tire (Make sure it clears the calipers/suspension parts while at the yard to avoid issues later). Unfortunately, most wanted ~$40 for the jack/tool kit. If you can't haggle with your yard, these can be purchased new from Harbor Freight for ~$32.

The cool thing is you get roadside assistance for 5 years with your 2012 Rio. So I'm not that worried about the missing spare. There is a comment in the manual that implies some sealants will indeed ruin the TPMS sensor and if you need to use the Kia supplied sealant you should have the sensor checked/cleaned (which is obvious as the tire needs to be replaced anyway).

I, for one, in a lightweight car like the Rio am happy to go without the weight of a spare. If I have a massive blowout the kit won't fix, you just call for free roadside service. That works as long as you're not totally in the middle of nowhere.

I've been carrying a pump & plug kit for about eight years. I also bought a spare, jack, & lug wrench for my '12 Rio 5, and a floor jack for garage work. A lot of the places I venrure off to, I'd be waiting hours for "roadside assitance".

same here.
i was thinking of searching the yards for a donut that would fit along with the jack.
not necessarily a full sized spare to keep the weight down.

contact member Cobra259 who is a parts manager at a Kia dealership and can get you a good deal on a spare tire kit. I think around $200 or so complete (US only)

Had the rear drivers tyre die in my old Sorento. Swapped it for the spare, was running on it for 20,000k's until traded the car in for something a little smaller.

Never used the spare on the Rio.
Personally, I would never not have a full size spare... Especially holidaying in Australia. You never know WHERE you might end up!
