Shattered clutch plate

Hi.
The clutch plate in my 2012 Rio 1.4 manual has just disintegrated on one side. This of course had to happen in the middle of a town a few hundred kilometres from the nearest Kia dealer. I took it to a mechanic who took it out for me, one side was perfect and the other side was bare metal, with only fibres all through the housing. The flywheel was damaged by shrapnel, however there was no burning or "blueing" present on any other part. It has done about 70,000k's and I've owned it since new. I drive very carefully, if I wanted to spin wheels and drive like a loony I wouldn't have bought a 1.4 Rio.

Has anyone else had any problems with their clutches?

Just as a footnote Kia says that the warrantee doesn't cover clutches, however if I pay for the towing back to Cairns (about $300) they will have a look at. Thanks Kia.

Hello Niel and welcome to the kia forums.
If you go top left of page and fill in your User CP members will have some of information needed to give best reply and the information will be there for all of your posts.
If you were a visitor here you would know I have not much respect for bad dealers.
Your dealer is being fare and doing the correct procedure offering to inspect the clutch for a possible fault.
The way you describe the damage the friction plates have worn down to rivets and one or some have broken causing massive failure. On strip down this will be obvious wear signs and your dealer being fare so far will be happy to show you old part and explain more.
Unfortunately clutch wear is not down to careful driving. It is all to do with length of time the clutch is depressed especially around the Bite point ( just before and as drive takes up) and some people tend to hold foot on clutch for rest or in anticipation.
Town drivers can expect shorter clutch lives. I might change gear 50+ times with 4 complete stops in 2 miles were I live hence AT was necessity.

Actually it does but only for the first 12 mo./12000mi. (or 20000km. in your case) if the clutch fails to function properly during normal use. You are well outside the warranty period. I have another opinion on this but I'll wait for more input from the OP before I post it.

If a dealer reports to Kia that a part failed through a manufacture fault it is normal for Kia to accept charge if car has been fully serviced on time. It may not be covered in writing but kia will in the right circumstances accept fault. IF the dealer passes on to their technical department.

It's hard to really tell you much without being able to physically inspect the clutch myself, but being a former Subaru tech and seeing all sorts of clutches shot by WRX owners, the symptoms you are describing are similar to that of someone who is riding the clutch.

A week ago I did lend it to someone, which is one of the reasons that I can't be absolutely sure that it wasn't a driver error. He may have been riding the clutch.
I had had the car back for less that 24 hours.
This is why I was asking if anyone else has had the same problem, to see if it was a regular problem, or if other people have been driving my car like a rental car.

I would like to thank everyone for the positive and helpful feedback.
Thanks:)

I haven't heard of it being a regular problem. I doubt that 24 hours of misuse would cause this. When he returned it to you was the clutch working properly?
