Hello everyone! First I'll introduce myself.I just traded in my 2G Rio sedan for a used white 2014 Rio Sedan LX with the 1.6 GDI. First let me say, I am in love with this car! It is night and day difference from my old Rio. It's got the 6spd auto with manual mode, which is about the only option on it. No fog lights or cruise but those should change in the future
So one thing I noticed from my old car is the engine after it starts up. It's summer where I live so it's already nice and warm in the morning but when I first start the engine, it idles around 1500rpm for a minute or so before it slowly settles down to regular idle. Is this normal for these engines?
Hello and welcome to the Kia forums.
Yes this is completely normal . The cars are programmed through a start procedure and as soon as the car is ready will drop to about 800rpm. after about a minute to about 1000rpm.
The thing to remember if you start and stop engine in fist minute or so it may flood.
Putting foot on accelerator before engine fires up does not help and may hinder start program.
Thanks Jeff! That's good to know. I mean, it caught me off guard because it's as if I'm starting it in winter weather, you know?
So another thing I noticed but I haven't poked under the hood yet, when I'm going slow in a parking lot with my window down, I hear a hissing sound coming from the engine. Is that just a natural sound the manifold makes with it being direct injection? I'm pretty confident the previous owner didn't turbocharge it lol.
when you do cold start, RPM is risen to 2000 or little less for 10-15 seconds (my car). then it will calm down. but you said that it stays a minutes? it seems longer. don't worry. it seems normal. it's not a big deal. it usually quickly goes down during Winter. and slowly down during Summer. if RPM gauge needle irregularly up and down while idle, it is a problem.
