TPMS Warning light

Any suggestions on how to reset the TPMS warning light? After a brief cold spell the TPMS light came on. I figured the cold weather may have affected the tire pressure. I adjusted the tires to the recommended 32psi while tires were cold and still can't get the light off. Would hate to have to take it to the dealership for an easy fix.

Recommended pressure is actually 33psi, cold. The TPMS system must see at least 33psi to clear the warning light. Try setting the pressure to 35psi in all the tires and see if the light goes out. Maybe your gauge is slightly off.

Also, does the light flash for a minute when you start the car up and then stay on, or does it come on solid initially. If it flashes first, it means there is a fault and a code is stored. If it doesn't flash, then it just indicates low tire pressure.

Great answer, particularly about a possible high-reading gauge combined with the mistake on the recommended pressure resulting in not enough pressure in the tire to turn off the warning.

OP, you thought cold weather MIGHT have affected pressure - it definitely does. You have to check your pressures weekly even when the low temps are about the same every night because all tires leak a little. When the low is 10 degrees lower than the previous low, you have to check them again.
Always check tire pressure first thing in the morning before the sun hits the tires.

Good tip, thanks.

I had the dash light go on recently after the first cold snap we had, and put air into each tire until the light went out. I wouldn't have realized that the spare was the culprit if the light stayed on.

Thumbs up!

Cold Weather will affected TPMS. Also if you are near Microwave Tower Transmitter.
And few people know this, but a dying/dead Battery in the TPMS Valve will give False Readings.
Our Dealership does NOT install TPMS on the Spare Tire.

I wonder if that is my problem.

Just bought a 2014 Kia Rio EX in December. It had apparently been on the lot since February 2014. The TPMS sensors had kicked while test driving, and they 'corrected' it. Now, when it's cold (like 20's recently here), it goes off (blink, then solid). I checked all 4 tires, and they are at 34 PSI, 1 over recommendation. The light goes out on it's own usually the next day.

How long do the batteries in the valves last usually?

i have a kia sportage. i bought it nov 2010. i think the name of the model is 2011. 1 month ago i just replace my tiers. the specific model comes with 225/60R17 hankook. my new tiers are 225/65R17. one month later the tpms light turns on. when i start the car is flashing and then stays on. i have the same pressure in all tiers. the low Tyre pressure position telltale is off. i was trying to increase and decrease the Tyre pressure in each Tyre to check in which on is the problem but nothing happened. the problem has to do with tyre size?? i must reset the sensor? how can i check if the sensor had broken ???

thank you very much

It's not a good idea to replace the tires on your car with those of a different size.

You have bought a tire with a smaller sidewall. That means that your tire is not as big as the tire you replaced. So your speed readings will be incorrect.

You have some problem with one of the TPMS sensors. This is unrelated to your buying the incorrect tires, unless of course the inflation pressure of the new tires is not the same as that of the proper tires that you should have bought.

Why would you buy tires for your car that are not the correct size?

i think 65 has bigger sidewall not smaller. about the tpms sensors. i believe that something need reprogramming or one of them has a problem. because i don't believe that broke when i change the tires and appear 1 month later. i took my car to an authorize mechanical and he told me that i must wait for the next time that he will have a kia with tpms sensor so to check my car with other car rims :/. to find which one has a problem!!!!!! i found that answer very stupid...... is anybody know how kia checki if the problem is on the sensors or if it is something with electrics....????????

Mario; the first thing you have to do is to make sure you set the tire pressures at the value indicated on the sticker on the door jamb or body, visible when the driver's door is open. Always set tire pressures when the tires are dead cold, like early in the morning before the sun hits them. Don't forget about the spare tire - set it at the recommended pressure you find on the side of the tire.
Then, monitor the tire pressure every few days early in the morning before driving the car to see if any of them are leaking. You could have a tire with a nail in it that's causing a very slow leak. It could also be a slow leak at a valve stem. I don't know how long the batteries last in a TPMS, but since I also have a 2011, I guess we'll find out.

Interesting topic. My wife's new 2015 Kia Rio showed tyre pressures warning light and sure enough the pressures was down due to a slow puncture. After repair the light stayed on for weeks even though the tyres seemed fine. On going to get the tyres checked it turned out two tyres had pressures that were too high - 38 psi. On balancing them all to 32 psi the light went out. Very impressive system.
