Hi all, I think there is another thread in here regarding this but can't find it. I wanted to share what I found out. I had mine in for steering issues-see steering thread for that-and I raised concern about the turbo noise at start-up- colder making it worse. The dealer technician sent an inquiry dircetly to Kia and Kia said in response via e-mail . . . "Advice 1: Advice to Tech: yes, the noise is wastegate releated. Kia is currently investigating this concern. Check that everything is tight. The noise should only last for a very short time while the engine is warming up. Thanks."
Kia is aware and looking into it apparently. If you are concerned, get it logged at your dealer maybe? I brought it to the dealers attention because mine was in for steering issues already. Was told to sit tight until further notice. But the more Kia is made aware the more serious they will take the issue.

good catch guys. from what i have read about other excessive turbo wastegate noise, it could be as simple as retensioning a retaining spring or maybe just replace it with a stronger one. i guess we will just wait and see what the fix is.

mine flutters for a few seconds when I start the car.. I give it a quick rev and it's gone. At this point, it doesn't hurt the car and it doesn't affect performance so I am not worried at this point. Apparently it is a common thing amongst turbocharged engines.. If a fix comes out, then I will handle it, but at this point it's not really a concern.

And mine still makes the noise. It's at the dealer now for steering again. I will have to ask when I go in next if there is any update. They seemed to think there was a TSB/Recall last time I was in but if they performed it, it didn't make any differrance.

yes a TSB [ENG104] for the wastegate rattle issue just got posted. They had to reprogram the ECU.

Good luck. I had a discussion with my dealer this after noon on this technical bulletin. He might look, but he found nothing in his system in Canada ...
Just send him a copy by email. At the moment the technical bulletin seems to be valid for the United States and in Canada, unfortunately, the problem seems to be the fruit of our imagination ... to follow ....

hehe.. The KIA service department doesnt know of a TSB about the wastegate either.. All he said that he will have one of his technician look into it before my appointment on Monday... I told him Ill bring him a copy in case they cant find it.

interesting...im at a dealership in canada and the only problem that kgsis lists is a service action for inspection of the wastegate rod, there is no mention of a noise but to check for a DTC trouble code, we shall see when it starts to get cold here in canada. i started up a turbo optima this morning and i did not hear any noise and it was 0*c this morning

I just have the pleasure and great honor to receive a phone call from my dealer favorite, followed by a technical bulletin for the wastegate in Canada. The good news is that they are able to open a pdf document :p

As mentioned above, the technical bulletin applies for the moment that the U.S. side, it may take up to two months so that it crosses the border to the Canadian side. The bulletin is dated September 2011, he predicts that in November 2011 it will be with us .... for now it has the update 168, need to go up to 170 for the waste gate mod ..

stay tuned

mod: Two thread for the same subject is it possible to merge them?

so i brought my 2012 sx into the dealership for it's first service this morning (3000 miles, yes it's a month old :( ). they are done after about 30 mins, but did not flash my ECM. i even brought the TSB printed out and talked to the service manager about it. He scanned my vin and the GDS system reported that it did not have any needed updates. So either this is not an 2012 sportage SX issue, or they haven't pressed it to all vehicles. it's kind of weird because on kgis, if you look up TSB's for the 2011-2012 (SL) sportage, then select the 2012 year, it still shows up as a TSB. i for one am glad that he doesn't just shoe horn it in, because the computer system is designed around the vin. so when he scans the vin all updates come on the screen. Also, the service manager has flashed this TSB update to a lot of 2011 sportage sx's. so i guess i have nothing to report other than that it (apparently) didn't apply to me.

as a side note, they had a bunch of 2012 optima sx's in stock. very nice looking car. might take it out for a test drive when i go get my sportage later today.

This TSB better apply to me cause mine rattles at a cold start. Its gonna be hard to show them since By the time I get to the dealer the car is going to be all warmed up. Might as well take some video so I can show them it rattles even if the car is warmed up.
