Hey all... new to these forums, just found them looking for info on my new Rio.

It's a 2006 Rio EX Convenience. I've had it about four months now, 6,500 km and suddenly the check engine light came on. Took it in and they had to reconnect the coil on cylinder 3. They said they've seen it before, I asked if it's a problem, they said they didn't think so. That was yesterday. The check engine light is back on today. I have a call in to get it looked at, so I can't be sure it's the same thing, but I'm surprised there's a problem so soon.

Has anyone else had this problem? Did it persist? Any comments/suggestions on this one?

I'll let you know what the the mechanics say when I get it in again (hopefully soon).

Thanks all!

Mine had a bad coil when I got it, I didn't get the CEL but driveability was affected when it got wet. They replaced the coil packs under warranty, and it's been fine ever since, no troubles at all.

I chalked it up to a fluke...have the techs look at it again.

Exactly how was driveability affected?
(i.e. stalling/hesitation/backfiring/loss of power/poor milage?)

It would hesitate and lose power, basically it was losing a cylinder. After it was repaired it never recurred, and has been solid. I put around 300 miles on it today, had to go to Milwaukee and back, then to Brodhead to play a gig. I'm pooped! It cruises nicely though, I really am enjoying it.

Okay, so it wasn't the coil this time. Apparently a software update was released by KIA over the weekend for the '06 Rio. Techie says that should fix any troubles.

Just got the car back today, so dunno, but the light is off now. I guess I'll have to wait for another wet cold day to see how it starts/drives.

Thanks for the replies!!

Software update for the '06? Really? Is it a TSB or a "Voluntary service campaign" thingy? Enquiring fellow Rio owners would like to know.

FYI...(knocking on wood) I haven't had any CEL events or adverse events due to wet weather.

I'm going to guess it's voluntary since the service centre here said it's only being installed on three cars in Ontario Canada that he knows of (all with similar probs), but I'll ask him about that update today and let you know.

It seems it didn't fix the problem, so I guess there's something else wrong. The CEL came on again this morning. When I started the car, it was really rough and shaky and the CEL was blinking. I left it for a minute to see what would happen, but it just kept running rough and the CEL kept blinking, so I turned it off. Turned it on again, same thing. Turned it off, then tried for a third time just to see. It wasn't rough, but the CEL is now on solid.

Automotive at my dealership is calling Kia Canada to see what they have to say. When they call me back to tell me what's up, I'll find out about the software update and let all know.

Cheers

Got an answer on the software update - apparently it came from Korea and is only for "affected cars." He couldn't give me any additional info on it, but my car was considred "affected" so I guess what I've written above explains the prob.

Since the software update didn't seem to work, they are going to replace my on board computer. They say they are doing it on speculation, but suspect that the computer is the root cause since everything else checks out (coils, wires, fuel injector, etc etc). They say the replacement should fix the rough start ups I'm getting too.

I've never even heard of this before. Anyone else?

Anyway, getting the work done early next week... will let you know. At this point all I can say is YAY warranty!!!
