What are the advantages/disadvantages to having the "overdrive" turned off when driving in city traffic. Is there any value to it? I understand when driving on the highway that it does make a difference, but was wondering if, with all the stop and go, there is a benefit to turning it off or leaving it on.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

This is just my opinion...

If, in city traffic, you never reach or barely reach 38 to 40 mph (the speed where 4th gear engages) and its 80+ degrees outside...then go ahead and turn it off...I believe there is some benefit to the transmission this way, as it will not go in and out of 4th gear in stop and go traffic. There is minor "wear and tear" prevention in that case, as the tranny will run a little cooler when it is not constantly going in and out of 4th gear (overdrive on our Rio's). Otherwise just leave it on all the time.

Personally, the only time I turn mine off is when I'm on a "challenging" highway on or off ramp and I need a little extra pep.

Hi,

i would think that it would be good to disable O/D when you need to complete your 1000 miles/km engine run in. In that case, you will never exceed the speed limit.
