How do you like my cold air intake mod on my 2006 Kia Rio5? It took me about an hour to figure out how to do it by myself... I still have to tie down the cone filter.

I left the original air box and air filter in because of two reasons. 1. The new cone filter can lay on the old air filter 2. There is shiny metalic plate on the backside of the air box. Its is bolted on with four bolts... I have no clue what to do with this. However, it does not impact the car as long as it is where it is and pluged in. Any clue as to what it is?

Cool looking filter. I'll have to go look at mine to try to see what that part your are talking about, but it sounds like it could be the mas-air sensor.(it measures the air coming in, and injects the apropriate amount of fuel) Not having that hooked up to what ever you are flowing air through, could make your car's computer think that you are not getting enough air, and therefore not give enough gas. Like I said, I'll have to look at mine to see if thats what it is.
One thing I noticed is that, by having the filter like you have it, you are acctually pulling in air that is hotter than what the factory air intake would do. If you look at the way it is from the factory, the filter box gets its air from a tube that runs to the outside of the engine compartment. The air that is in the engine compartment, is hot. Your filter is currently in the hottest place, and therefore drawing in hot air.
-What you may want to try is; Enclose the new filter in a box, or a box with the top open(closed hood closes the box), then try to make a pipe or tube that conects the filter box to a cooler area, such as the wheel well. You also need to make sure that your intake point, is not in an area that would get water into it via rain, or splash from road.
_Option 2, Get a K&N filter that fits the factory box
Here is a picture of one for a Civic

You can see how they use the box to keep the filter isolated from the hot engine compartment air.
Good luck, and keep us posted. I may try to do one too.

Actually... I think I might have an idea as to how I can move it way from that spot. Do you think that if I extend the filter to the fuse box area that it'll help at all?

And yes... take a look at that shiny plate on the back of the air box... its very interesting. But I don't think that its an air sensor... the air sensor was on the coupling bewteen the air box and the hose... I just unscrewd it from the box and attached the cone filter to it directly. I want to take the plate off completly... but I'm not sure how to do it... I can't budge the connections!

I was able to use the stock air box.

If you look on the right side you'll see another tube leaving the airbox from the under side, you can use that tube or place to connect a tube to actually pull in cold air from the outside. I ran a tube from the stock airbox to the side front bumbers to pull in air that gets forced to the sides of the radiator... an easy mod if you have the right parts and pull apart some things...

also I noticed the stock air box had another little air tube connection to a plastic box that sits in the drivers side wheel well area... I couldn't find any other purpose then to dampen the sound of the air coming into the car??? anyone know what else this would be for? it looks pretty pointless to me...

that little tube is to let water out of the air box if your car ever started taking on water. its just a safety feature as so u dont ruin your engine with hydro lock
