I gotta tell ya...I'm really glad I got mine. I test drove the Hyundai Accent, Chevy Aveo, Ford Focus, Scion xA and the Kia Rio. I didn't like the looks of the Accent...inside or out, the Aveo seemed like a tinny POS from the get-go, the Scion was ok, but felt a but underpowered and rode a bit rough, they ruined the interior of the Focus for the 2006 model year (it was Toyota Echo-like, and I hate that...)plus I couldn't find one that was "scaled-down" on the dealer lot...I couldn't see myself spending $1250-$1750 more for a Ford anyway. And then there was the Rio.
I'm 6'5", and the Rio, IMHO, had the best fit, looked better inside and out, than all the other cars I evaluated, and I was only looking for a basic-transportation-commuter car for my daily 40 mile round trip commute. It didn't look or drive like your typical econo-box either. The warranty and gas milage added to the plusses of this car. I looked into a few other things as well...replacement tires for the Rio were the least expensinve, the engine bay looked DIY friendly (i.e. belts, hoses, plugs, alternator, water pump, starter look more accessible than on most newer cars I see...I plan on running and keeping this car past the 10 years or 100k miles mark, I've driven beaters as my commuter car for 13 years and ran them to all to around 200k...so this was important to me as well) the dash was set up logically, and I was able to get the option of not having power windows and locks (IMHO, its more crap to break...it sucks ripping into door panels, drilling through rivets, and cutting up my paws to replace a power window motor) I got mine for $13,500 out the door. Overall...I'm happy with it...for now. I'll see what happens after 25k and 60k miles, and I'll see how "customer-friendly" the service department at my dealer is.
