Hello, all! I just bought a 2006 Rio5 and it's only getting around 25-27mpg on the highway, not 38! The dealer claims they can't find anything wrong with the car (they only checked the computer) and that I'm stuck with the bad mileage.

Does Kia have a 30-day return policy or something? I presume not. Any suggestions on adding that thirteen miles per gallon?

Two things...

One is that I think mileage improves as the car gets broken in from what I have heard. Not sure if that is the case with yours or not.

The second is that I have read a lot about the Rio line and have seen lots of complaints about some cars not getting the EPA mileage. Most of them have been the previous version of the car though. Have you called the Kia customer service reps and talked to them about how you are dissatisfied and see what they can come up with?

Heh, the "customer service" guy I talked to was perfectly clear that those mileages are just estimated and not even done on a real road. They said I'm stuck.

There's an ECM reprogram that has been issued to correct this. As your dealer if this has been performed on your vehicle yet.

It will also get better as it gets broken in; around 500-1000 miles.

For the 2006's? I have about 1750 miles on mine. I've been getting close to around 23-25mpg as well; auto trans; mostly city driving, no jack rabbit starts, coasting to lights and generally babying the thing.

Should I bring this up to the service guys when I bring it in for the first oil change?

I'd at least ask about it. When you bring your car in, they are supposed to check the screen that tells them when updates like that are available. Not all of them will get the updates, but I guess some of the ECM's made it out of the suppliers with the wrong fuel maps or something. Kia never tells us, they just say "do it". Occasionally, they will tell us the reason, like in this case that the reprogram will improve fuel economy, they just don't say what's wrong with the current reprogram.

Please don't take this personally. I can't speak for the Kia Tech but no one on the net should be giving out personal information like where they live or work. There are plenty of weirdness in this world and don't think it is a wise thing to do. Some angry stalker might want to hurt a Kia tech! Just be glad we have people on the forum with Kia expertise willing to share their knowledge with us.
