I just passed 15,000 miles on my 06.5 Optima V-6. Window sticker said 22 city, 30 highway. My average combined economy is 25mpg. I'm pretty happy with that . Anyone else about the same?
I check my gas mileage with every fill-up. I now have 25k+ miles on my 2006.5 Optima V6 that I've had for 18 months which was listed for 22city/30highway. I always get only 20-22mpg. Even on trips, it is 22mpg. The dealer has told me it is combination of the ethanol gas mixture in CA, and the emissions system for CA that denigrates the efficiency. This seemed to be proven because for brief period the Check Eng. light came on a year ago (BTW, the dealer fixed the problem), and that particular half of a tank seemed to get great gas mileage (approx. 27mpg....assuming that the gauge is accurate...which it seems to be nearly all the time). The dealer told me that when the Check Eng. light came on, the car had gone into default mode, and turned off the emissions controls, hence my gas mileage went up. I don't know if that makes sense, but I do know that I've always gotten somewhere between the city and highway ratings on the 7 other cars I've owned in my life before moving to CA. Does anyone else have low gas mileage performance in California?
one of my co-workers also has an 06.5 Optima V-6. I was surprised to hear her claim of only getting about 22mpg as well. But some of you have observed about the same with your Optima's. I think the differance between her mileage and mine is I tend to drive more conservatively (4cyl would be enough motor for me) and I drive highway about 70% of the time whereas she is city driving almost 90% of the time.
last two tanks my measured average was in the 26.5mpg range. my friend is still at 22mpg with hers.
I will be switching to straight gas and synthetic oil soon and, though hardly a scientific approach, will see if my results improve any.
I can't tell you how pissed off I was when I first started checking mileage after break-in on my '07. I drive around Charlotte alot and I'm getting 22-24 MPG 60% city. On 100% highway I'm getting 28mpg. I was pissed because my '99 Formula was exactly the same in the city and 29+ MPG highway. I figured giving up more than half of my power would net much better mileage. I was wrong. At least it burns 87 octane.
Oh, it's a 2.4L auto and the Firebird was a 6 speed.
