Default Hyundai TPMS sensors on my 06.5 Optima?

I am considering some 18" rims from a 2007 Santa Fe. Bolt pattern is the same, hub bore is the same, and offset is the same so should work fine, but I am concerned about operation of the TPMS system. Do the two systems look at pressure directly or is it an indirect system that looks for deflation based on comparing tire rotation speed? Any thoughts?

IIRC the hyundai and probably the kia system's sensors transmit a wireless signal to receivers in the car to signal that everything is OK. If you transfer your original sensor to the new wheels you should be set. If you keep the sante fe's sensors installed they probably won't 'talk' to your car plus they are probably set to signal problems at a different pressure. A quality tire shop should be able to swap the sensors for you.

Think of it like a garage opener and a remote. If you have the wrong remote for that particular garage it won't open.

Maybe I'm way off, but wouldn't the new lower profile tires need to ride at a different pressure? If so, then your stock sensors will be tripping the TPMS alarms unless you stay within a couple pounds of 30psi.

Just a thought.

tgood, the tpms on our cars is a direct, inflation pressure sensing moniter.
early model low pressure monitering systems relied on input from abs sensors. if one wheel was turning at a faster rate for a certain length of time (it would have to allow for going around curves or making a turn) the computer "assumed" the faster rotation was based on a tire that had a lower static loaded radius.

my friend and I swapped tires to see if the system relearns the signal. (we both have 06.5 Optima's. she has the 16" wheels, mine are 17") They did not. within about 3 or 4 miles, the tpms lights lit up in both of our cars.
I'm told the Kia dealer can "relearn" both of our cars to accept the swapped sensors.

the dealer can relearn the new swapped sensors. i have done it before. as for low profile tires just put in the same psi you would in your factory tires. how low profile are you talking about
