Question Behind the Console Access

Hi, all,
We recently purchased a Ruby Red 2007 LX I4. We really love it. I'd like to install a second 12V accessory outlet just below the ashtray, but I can't figure out how to get in there. Does anyone have some hints on how to gently disassemble the console area so I can gain access to the wiring?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Remember that you have the cigar lighter receptacle that you can use and not have to install a second outlet...

Default Cigar lighter receptacle use...

Well, yes, Bob, if you want to keep the ashtray open all the time. However, some accessory plugs will not fit in the confined space in the ashtray in front of the lighter receptacle. Keeping the ashtray open tends to negate the use of the recessed tray underneath it, too.

I have found out that although the lighter receptacle IS switched through the ignition, the second receptacle in the console compartment is NOT. Considering that the one in the console is typically used for accessories that you want to keep plugged in while NOT running down your battery, the fact is is not switched makes little sense. For right now, I have to manually shut off my XM receiver each time I get out of the car.

So, I'll ask a second question: Anyone know how to remove that receptacle so I can get to the wires? I want to to run a second wire to it from the Lighter fuse so it will become switched, too. I'm not one to go prying around with a screwdriver and scratching things up needlessly. Anyone know the secret?

Go to www.kiatechinfo.com.

Register.
Go to Shop.
Select the Optima [MG] (which is the new body style 2006.5-2007).
Select 2006 (I know you have an 07, but the 06 selection has more info).
Then Engine Type and your engine.
Click on the link on the left hand side and select Body (Interior and Exterior), then Interior then Console, and finally Repair Procedures.

Word of caution, although I have not removed the console, some of the images and directions are "much easier said than done", for lack of a better term I'm saying everything is fit together nice and tight, and doesn't just "come apart" as easily as you would hope.

Thanks, ndc! That should let me get to the outlet. I didn't see the same info for the lighter/ashtray - but I'll see if they have anything for the heater/AC controls.

Wish me luck!

It's a little tricky to get at the center cluster. You need to remove the trim piece around the radio. You do this by gently prying the entire trim piece off. I used a tool kit from Crutchfield when I was replacing the stock stereo. You start by prying around the radio and working out. The entire piece,(with the heater controls) comes out as one piece. Then you can get to the piece with the ashtray.
