Question about Duplicate keys

I just bought an 06.5 Optima and would like to get extra keys made. The owners manual says using after-market keys will disable the ignition or something like that. I took my key to the hardware store and they have a machine that tests whether or not your key has a chip in it and is therefore safe to make duplicates of. The tester said mine doesn't have a chip and is ok to copy. I'm still skeptical. But getting a copies made at Kia will cost a heck of a lot more. Does anyone here know the real answer to this question?

I tried and they cut the key, but I wasn't able to find anyone who could make a key that would open the door except the KIA dealership. I had the same concern on the chips, but I never got a straight answer.
