Hey all,

I got a quick question. What type of oil am I supposed to use in my '06 Kia Rio LX. I just purchased the car and haven't done an oil change on it yet but just wanted to know. Is it 5w20?

Thanks in advance.

Conventional is good for 4-5k, pennzoil platinum/amsoil xl good for 7-8k and amsoil ASM 0w-20 I am running now. I need a few more miles before I pull a sample and test it, I'm waiting for 10k miles to pull the 1st sample. I have several UOA's on bob already I don't know if I posted the Pennzoil platinum. My bob I.D. is "taterandnoodles"

2006 Kia Rio Pennzoil 5W-20 5175 miles - Bob Is The Oil Guy

Use either 5 or 0 that only applies to cold pumping performance in the 0 -10 -20F range is where the difference between the 2 really appears. I ran several conventionals that are posted on bob now I am using amsoil for longer drains. PP had the same wear with more miles and more reserve TBN. TBN was shot on all of the dino's in my Rio at 4-5k. My car is now all amsoil I am using the atf in the PS and trans.

Have a question on this oil change discussion. With the price of gas going up so high I drive alot less, being retired I have no need to drive to work ect. Now then I use Mobil 1 10/30 or Penz Platium 10/30. My last change was in March and here it is July and I only have 2,000 miles on the oil. Should I still change the oil at 5/6 months with this low a milage on it? BTW virtually no short trips, have to travel 30 miles rd. trip to get anywhere. No heavy traffic either, live in the country.

jcwit I live in the country myself but I rack up the miles, still have a J O B. If warranty is not an issue I would run longer and shoot for mileage versus time. How many miles do you do in a year? PP/M1 I would keep in for 1 year personnally. With no short tripping and easy drives 7-8k us safe on PP, 9k for M1 if I remember how the last or should I say only UOA on bob for a rio looked on M1.

At your current rate of 2k every 4 months roughly that's only 6k per year, I would deffinately keep it in personnally. I ran amsoil ACD in my truck that is rarely driven for 1 year no biggie as long as the oil has enough TBN to prevent acid build up. I could have done 2 years easily.

But this is your car so do what you are comfortable with. If you are going to change your oil every 6 months or less with 3k miles I would use conventional.

The Right Oil

Dude, I run only Synthetic, But Amsoil Is Crap, It's all Recycled Synthetic, (i.e. A Castrol, QS, Mobil 1, Penzoil Slurry) and anyway you slice it thats not good, you may as well be going to Mr. Lube nd getting that Bulk 5w20 Shit, I have Also used QS Horse Power, Although this may be good in Ferrari's, It's Crap in Kia's, Significant Reduction in MPG, and on Next oil Change It was fine, though I thought it might be the Oil Filter, so I Tried again 5000 Later, Same thing Happened, With Diff Oil Filter, so I strongly advise against Both Amsoil and Quaker State: Horse Power, Both are no good, I used to Use Castrol Syntec in My Miata, I had no Complaints With it... And Very Few With it in My "Rio". However the one that I do Recommend is Mobil 1 0w20, I have Noticed a Major HP, and MPG Diff with this, Mobil 1 Has even started to Manufacture a New Syn formula that Guarantees A Higher MPG!!!
I go 5000 Between Oil Changes though, I could go as High if not Higher than 10K but I really Would rather not Chance it.

anyway those are my Recommendations

That has to be the most inflamitory statement I have seen in some time.

That is your opinion. My comments are my opinion. FYI it is widely known that amsoil gets their base oils from exxonmobil. But it is not the same as anything Mobil 1 produces since the additives are a key ingredient in a motor oils performance.

Find an oil you are happy with, change it at a decent interval and don't loose any sleep over it. I have not found a oil that did not provide decent performance (wear wise) in the rio's little 4 that is currently on a shelf in a retail store. I've tested Amsoil I have also looked at what other results have been through use and testing and I have absolutely no hesitation using their slurry in MY car. :harhar:

I find in interesting when a person says a product is crap. Yet the very company they attempt to cut down is the only company that will cover your engine warranty when doing extended drains per their recommendations.

After nearly 40 years of engine building and over 35 years of service maintenance I still find that knowledge is power.

Not sure where you got your information on AMSOIL. But they don't get the base stock from anyone. It's synthetic man, 100% class 4 synthetic. They do get some additive stock from Exxon but that's it. As far as quality, dude check the figures, no other oil out there comes close. Yah it costs more, but if you do exteneded drain intervals it becomes cheaper. Not to mention your covered by thier warranty.

Be careful with those extended intervals. Maybe your high-priced, full-synth can go the distance, but the the oil filter CANNOT!

BTW, after a lot of homework on the subject, and my own experience, I run good old conventional 10W30 in my '08 Sedona, with
oil/filter changes every 5K miles. I also substitute 1 qt. Marvel Oil. Now, I must say I live in So. FL, so it's Hot most of the year; chilly for us is 50's F.
I get 27-29mpg highway @ 70-75mph cruise. That's with hauling ~700 lbs people, dogs, cargo.

Be surprised if Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Any other high-priced synth could better those numbers.
