Question cost of clutch replacement?

I have a 07 Rio, standard tranny with 96,000 miles. It has started making a noise when the clutch is pushed in. I have not lived in area long (North West Arkansas) to know "good" mechanics yet. Took to a local mechanic and he wants 995.00 for parts and labor to replace the clutch,, this seems high to me,,,,,,,, thoughts? Also what should a starter cost? he wants $325.00 (parts) + $67.00 labor to replace starter.
