Default Airbag warning light - B1448 - OCS Mat Defective?

While driving our 2006 Kia Rio last week my wife noticed that the red airbag warning light stayed on while driving.

I took the car to our local Kia dealer and they told me the passanger side seat sensor is defective and needed to be replaced.

"TECH FOUND CODE B1448 OCS MAT DEFECTIVE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE P/S FRONT SEAT BOTTOM TO RESOLVE ISSUE EST IS $871.00 WOULD HAVE TO ORDER PART"

What I don't understand is that if the problem is this airbag passanger sensor mat, then why does the orange 'passanger side airbag off' light (above the radio) turn on/off when I sit/not sit in the passanger seat?

I checked the connectors direclty under the passanger side seat and all seemd ok.

Do i really need to spend a 1/5 of the car's trade-in value just to get the airbag to operate?

btw, the car is just 3 WEEKS OUTSIDE WARRANTY and only has 44689 miles

My airbag light just came on too recently. My girlfriend was laying back in the seat and the red airbag light came on. She sat up and the light went out. And then it started just staying on. I figured it had something to do with the OCS. $871? Good lord! And mine was 2,000 miles out of warranty. I wish there was a way to bypass the cushion and make the seat/car to think there is someone in the seat. Much cheaper!

Maybe try looking for wrecked rio's and see if you can remove the sensor? Not sure all of what is necessary to swap em out, but I dont seeing it being very difficult. As for whether or not it is in fact the sensor, you bring up a good point. Im sure someone here will have another idea for a solution soon.

I do believe that the ocs isnt so much a sensor but a series of sensors rather that check for multiple things, so while the weight detection portion of the system may be working, other parts may not. I dont know for certain but it might be something worth looking into

Mine is doing the same thing and for the exact same reason. There has to be a better way to fix it. The passenger seat could not have been used more than 100 hours in the four years I've owned it. very rarely is any one in that seat... not near as often as the drivers seat

What is the warranty period for that part?

The tech told me that the warranty for the airbag system is 5 years or 60k miles (Basic Warranty).

I would love to bypass the sensor. I still don't understand how the ocs mat could be defective if it still indicates the presence of a passenger.

Does anyone know else B1448 might be referring to? Is there recalls for other Kia's with similar problems?

No recalls related to your vehicle. There is a TSB for the 2009-2010 Optima, 2010 Sorento and 2010 Rio for this code, but the OCS in those vehicles uses an electric field sensor that can be disrupted if an electronic device is set on the sensor or if it gets wet.

Bypassing the sensor could disable the passenger airbag and pretensioner. Did the dealer try erasing the code or checking the connector for poor contact?

The dealer didn't really elaborate on exactly what they checked (I'm guessing they just ran the code) and I'm not even sure that they tried to clear the code.

I disconnected and reconnected all of the connectors under the seat then disconnected the car's battery for about 10 min. Will this reset the code? I thought I read somewhere that the airbag system's codes didn't need to be reset, that once the problem was fixed it would automatically reset?

I really do appreciate all the suggestions / help. I loved this car until I found this (what I would consider) insignificant problem to be so damn expensive.

Default Air Bag Light

My air bag light was acting up also.Did a search on-line and found out that there was a voluntary recall to fix the problem.I called the 800 number for Kia USA and they ran my VIN number. My car covered in recall.Local dealer replaced passenger seat sensor no charge.Took much less than a hour.
150000 miles on my car,way out of warranty. 2006 Kia Rio 5
