Default Oil change in 2008 Rio LX, 5w20 was used?

I was due for an oil change, 3600 miles, so I dropped my Rio off at a local place while I went to lunch.

I told them I wanted 5w30 oil. I didn't notice until I got home that the receipt said 5w20 and I was charged $4 more for "performance oil".

I didn't call them yet but the Rio is far from a "performance" car and I am not sure if they used 5w20 instead of 5w30 as its going to be winter here and cold soon.

It's your car you can put ANY kind of oil in you like. But Kia wants you to use 5W20.
If I were you I would call whoever changed your oil and get a refund for the extra charge. There is NO extra cost involved between 5W30 and 5W20.

5w20 vs 5w30 makes almost no difference as viscosity at low temperatures is same, the difference is only at high temperatures, and even though, they are so small that you would not know which oil you have.

if they put 20w50 instead you could notice harder cold start (but when temperature drops way below freezing point).

so - do not worry, your car will be fine. You can also go to 0w-20 for the most "green" synthetic oil, but savings in fuel probably will not overcome expenses for oil.

KIA wants 5w20 I believe for all petrol cars. Over a time you may want to use more thick oil, but probably at around 150k miles or so...

As has been stated you may use any oil you wish, its your car. The car is spec'ed for 5w-20 oil as are many cars today. The "performance" oil was more than likely a synthetic oil which for only $4.00 extra I'd be more than happy with. Better oil for a very nonimal charge.

OK thanks. I was just worried at first as I thought 5w30 was normal, then a guy at work told me his car always uses 5w20 so I felt better.
