Question What type of oil to use?

Hey all,

I got a quick question. What type of oil am I supposed to use in my '06 Kia Rio LX. I just purchased the car and haven't done an oil change on it yet but just wanted to know. Is it 5w20?

Thanks in advance.

Per the oil cap and owners manual yes 5w20 for the U.S. 5w30 is also just fine if you like. Brand you like the most will be just fine.

I am running amsoil 0w20 myself, but I have run most brands in my rio.

Per viscosity 5W-20 is generally preferred.

Per type you have many options.

More info is here. http://www.kia-forums.com/do-yoursel...e-manuals.html

Thanks guys!

I am looking to use synthetic oil...better on mpg. Should I stick to 5w20 or will 0w20 be ok? I heard it should be fine using the lighter weight oil because it's synthetic.

RDNK 4RE, how long do you go between oil changes?

Conventional is good for 4-5k, pennzoil platinum/amsoil xl good for 7-8k and amsoil ASM 0w-20 I am running now. I need a few more miles before I pull a sample and test it, I'm waiting for 10k miles to pull the 1st sample. I have several UOA's on bob already I don't know if I posted the Pennzoil platinum. My bob I.D. is "taterandnoodles"

2006 Kia Rio Pennzoil 5W-20 5175 miles - Bob Is The Oil Guy

Use either 5 or 0 that only applies to cold pumping performance in the 0 -10 -20F range is where the difference between the 2 really appears. I ran several conventionals that are posted on bob now I am using amsoil for longer drains. PP had the same wear with more miles and more reserve TBN. TBN was shot on all of the dino's in my Rio at 4-5k. My car is now all amsoil I am using the atf in the PS and trans.

I wanted to add a blurb about what I expect the amsoil to last. Should be in the 15k range from pervious calculations. Check the link:

Oil Change Intervals

Don't get caught up in the whole study though. Good info and testing but incomplete. Theory 5 has always been spot on, I know Ted he's a very knowledgeable Amsoil dealer.

Have a question on this oil change discussion. With the price of gas going up so high I drive alot less, being retired I have no need to drive to work ect. Now then I use Mobil 1 10/30 or Penz Platium 10/30. My last change was in March and here it is July and I only have 2,000 miles on the oil. Should I still change the oil at 5/6 months with this low a milage on it? BTW virtually no short trips, have to travel 30 miles rd. trip to get anywhere. No heavy traffic either, live in the country.
