Default Cost of replacing timing belt, etc.

Am in the process of getting my timing belt replaced. Both shops have to find a place where they can get the belt so it will be tomorrow before I know what the cost will be. For you people that have had this work done at a non-dealer shop how much did you have to pay to get it done? Both shops did agree that unless the water pump is leaking theres no reason to replace it. Did my own search and I can get a Gates timing belt for less than $100 and the tensioner is $85. Thanks for your input!

2.7L six. I'm really surprised that both shops(each has a very good reputation) need this much time to find the parts. Between the Kia and Hyundais I just assumed this is a pretty common job.

IF you have the time to spare, you can save money on my web site... I will gladly ship to the house or to the shop if they will allow you supply your own parts.

At our dealer its $499, with tensioner additional $120.. At least around here we know we are competitive.

Just got estimate. For replacement of timing belt and serpentine belt the cost is $600 and this includes 2 yr parts warranty and 1 year labor warranty.

For replacement of timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, idler pully the cost is $910. This includes 60K mile parts and labor warranty. Still waiting on the other place.

That seems really high, Maybe its market in Iowa vs NC. The drive belts are rought retail 35 each... and we dont charge any additional to put them on.

I would be shocked if you needed the wather pump or the idler pulley either. I dont even think I have them in stock they are so rare to go bad.

My suggestion is to price it out at the KIA dealer as well, you may be supprised.. but again I am supprised at the huge difference between market pricing as well so who knows.... lol

Let me know if I can help and save you some cash

Just had mine done at 65K miles, 2 months ago. Tbelt and tensioner, total cost was 476.87 that includes the tax.
Mine was at My local Kia Dealer. Shop around, some are upping thier prices for some rip off reason.
Have a ride with you, mine took over 4hr, but 30min. of that was for a ecu reflash (recalled)

I got 2 quotes from the 2 Kia dealers in vt. The other wanted 54x.xx with tax included (6%)

1fastkia, Do you have the 2.7L engine? I'm confused about the tensioner. Does this get replaced for the timing belt or the serpentine belt? I know the serpentine has a tensioner. So whats the idler pulley? What does get changed when the timing belt gets changed?

No, I have the 2.0 but price shouldn't be much different. Basically either engine, its preaty much the same process and labor time.
There is a tensioner for all the belts, they all have their own. The kia store guy said that for him the tensioner is extra, but was changed at my dealer at the said price noted above.
The dealer will most likely "inspect" the water pump for leakage. If it is found to leak, they will "suggest" replacement but that would be more $$ on top of the t-belt price.

If your at 60K miles, they might also suggest the 60K miles service. With t-belt change and 60K miles service, that price jumps way up to nearly $800 dollars. I opted out cause I can do all that stuff myself. Most of it being inspection of items.

Timing belt kits are available on ebay for both engines. Ebay has the simpler kits and the more thorough kits(with wp/tensioners....). The kits will give you an idea of what you should replace.

Most components can last 120k. So, alternating between a simple belt kit and thorough belt kit shouldn't be a problem in a well maintained non-abused vehicle.
