Timing Belt for 2010 Sportage (2.0L I4 62,000 miles)

Ok so one of the schedules say that we should replace the timing belt at the 60,000 mile mark. How important is it that we get it done this year or can it wait? I think my wife is a little hesitant at spending the money on the belt, but I remind her that it'll be cheaper than a new motor if the belt does go.

Are these poor quality belts that they recommend replacing at 60k when others (like the 2000 Plymouth neon we had) recommended replacement at 100,000? We traded in the Neon for the Sportage when the Neon hit about 94,000 miles.

Thanks.

Thanks, I'll make the appointment. I'm not looking for a cheap alternative, I was just curious if the quality of the factory belt was poor hence the 60k replacement schedule.

We only have one Kia dealership in town and the mechanic we have been our routine maintenance at can do it but they still buy the parts from the dealership anyway... I guess I'll compare prices between the two. At least with the dealer, I should be able to get a loaner for the day.

Check out rockauto.com for quality parts at usually half the price....
I have replaced tb's in 2.0l Spectras and it wasn't a hard job....just take time...
Too bad you are not close by (Ohio) I'd love to make $440 off of you :)
I don't know your abilities (mechanical) but I'd suggest you check around... and the tensioner or water pump don't need replacing this time around...
Maybe the engine facing forward is different work as the Spectras 2.0l is sideways....I'd think it would be easier...

By all means change that sucker, my first Kia was a rio cinco and the belt broke at 60102 miles. 103 miles to long for the warranty so I had to eat the head replacement costs. so my two newer kias get the belts changed every 59950 miles. well worth the cost to change than to eat 1500 bucks worth of engine work on the four cyl. would hate to see the cost for a V6. *shudders*

Well they replaced the belts (while they were in there) priced as quoted. They said the tires were at 4/32 which they estimated at about 10,000 miles left. We bought those about 30,000 miles ago (Yokohama).

Which brings us to today, my wife calls to tell me the car was rear ended by an 06 Taurus. The muffler was pushed back about 4" and the bumper cover was squished. Hopefully there aren't any "frame" issues.

Hi Bakeman I was under the impression that as the later cars came out the belt lives improved and by 2008- 2010 the life was longer than the lives you are quoting.
Even the despite what the book say would change earlier especially on time. 6 years for 7 .
Your service book should tell you or your dealer can put in your details and look it up. If they do not check your details they are only guessing usually in their favour.
