I have a 2009 Sportage 2.0 auto. I recently inquired into getting a transmission flush and filter change. They told me that to change the filter they have to separate the engine from the transmission to get at it which is about 9-10 hrs labour! Never heard of this before and just wondering if this is at all true.
On another note and I know that no case is typical but under normal usage no severe service other than city driving do these transmissions tend to hold up well? Are they known for premature failures or have any issues specific to them?
I worked for Chrysler for 13 years and overhauled or replaced probably a 1000 different transmissions. I've worked for Kia for seven years and changed two. So I'm not biased when I say they are very good transmissions.
Hi the transmission place you went to were eager to make a lot of work.
A good transmissions garage would have recognise type of box/torque converter and recommended a drain and high pressure flush and refill . Cost would be about x3to4 the price of you buying the 7.8 litres of the correct SP-111 type fluid.
It is easy to drain and refill yourself. New fluid in through dipstick with funnel. old fluid out by removing under guard removing drain plug allow to drain till completely finished. measure fluid taken out. You will probably find it is well short of 7.8 litres usually only 5-6 litres. This is why a high pressure flush recommended.
But you can just refill amount of fluid to bring to correct level. Run the car for 1k miles then change fluid again this will act as a flush.
I have found it is better to drain straight after run before sludge settles.
You will see the cloudiness and viscosity of old fluid and will be happy to do follow up.
