Default Coolant Temp Sending unit and Sensor are the same?

Hi, I hope someone can guide me with this. I have a Kia Sephia 2001.
Is the Coolant Temperature Sending unit the same than the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor?
I have a Chilton book and it shows me the Coolant Temperature sending unit and the Engine Coolant temperature Sensor as two different things, but when I try to find them in my car, I can only find the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT).
I can't find where is the Coolant Temperature Sending unit.

Do I have both things in this model or I just have the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.

I think I need to change the ECT, I got the code Error P128 and the book says Thermostat Stuck open. So I changed it. Few months later I got the same Code Error.

Thanks for any help.

i've only seen 2 temp sensors on the 98's. i own a 99 and a 2000 sephia and both of them only have engine coolant temp sensor. all the t8d engines from 99 to 2004 have only an ECT sensor. if you got the P0128 and you changed the thermostat, did you do a coolant flush/change while you were at it? old coolant or improper mixture will throw the code as well. i got a new ECT from kiaparts.com for about $25.

There's two temp measurement devices near the thermostat housing - the one with a single contact is used for the dashboard gauge and the other one with two contacts is used by the ECU.

For service info register (free) with KiaTechInfo and click on 'Shop' on the left, and for elect schematics click on 'ETM'.

Quality and not quantity counts.

Thanks for the help.

Question ? Since there is only one temperature sensor, this one sends the temperature to the PCM and to the Gauge. Right??

Yes, I did a flush when I changed the Thermostat. After I changed the Thermostat I still got the Code P128. I reset it, then a month later I got it again ( P128 ). I reset it again and then I was fine for about 3 month and then got it again. I think it might be the ECT. Any suggestion.

Regards

change the ect.

as for the 2 temp sensors...i'd sure like to know where the second one is because i seem to be able to only see ONE on every t8d engine that comes into work. plus i can't seem to find 2 of them on the 2 sephias i own. I'll take a couple pictures and show you.

Thanks. I'll change it.
Well as far as the other Temperature sensor, I don't have it in my car. The Chilton Sephia 94-01 shows 2. One is the Coolant Temperature Sending unit that goes to the Temperature Gauge and the other one is the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT) that goes to the PCM. The book doesn't specify which model has 2 and which has one. Maybe is a mistake in the Book. The ECT is at the right of the Thermostat and the other sensor is at the Left (more or less).
I hope after changing the ECT I won't get the P158 any longer.

Thanks.

My car has the 2000 T8D engine.
In the attached picture the dual contact temp sensor is obscured and all that can be seen is the single contact sensor used for the temperature gauge.

Lets not get into who's right and wrong here - lets just state our individual findings and experiences, and this way anyone reading the thread will be aware that there may be one or two temperature sensors which will prompt them to look what their own vehicle has.
Differences can exist depending on what market the vehicle was sold in.
