Default P0422 Error Code - 2000 KIA SEPHIA

Hi,

Once in a while, I am getting check-engine light with the error code
P0422 (2000 KIA SEPHIA).

Earlier the frequency is once in a month, now a days once in few days.

the car is running perfectly 100% right,

I am wondering either the oxygen sensors are getting bad
(or) my catalyst efficiency is really low - Nothing is replaced yet

My mechanic says its OK to drive like that, clear the codes
whenever you get the engine light.

I am doing the same from the few months and car is working fine.

I want to know, anyone observed the similar situation in their cars
and how you fixed the P0422 issue.

I appreciate your help

thanks,
Shashi

check the gas cap.then reset the ecu. Disconnect the neg termial on battery hit brakes then reconnect. If that dont cure it then Id look into 02 sensors.

the code is your o2 sensor --- main catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1

I've MANY of those and everytime it's been the gas cap. I replace it, awhile later the light goes off. Once I got the o2 sensor and it read "bank 1"

a p0422 is not an o2 sensor. it's the cat. the pre-cat is breaking down and needs to be replaced. in order to tell if it's an o2 sensor you need to monitor the downstream sensor with an oscilloscope or a voltmeter.

p0442 is a small evap leak...or most likely a leaking gas cap.

Default yikes!

So that means replacing the first cat, eh? ughh, can that be done by the home mechanic? and if so, what kind of cost do you think a cat would run?

you could do it at home if you wanted to providing you have the tools to do it. you cannot get this cat as a universal replacement so your only choice is to go OEM. keep in mind that if the warm-up catalyst has broken down, there's nowhere else for the material to go other than into the main cat so you may end up replacing both cats and the main cat is the expensive one. expect to pay somewhere in the ball park of $1000 total for both cats plus labor unless you choose to replace them yourself. just keep a can of PB blaster or Liquid Wrench handy to unfreeze seized bolts.

you can however get away with buying a universal cat to replace the main cat but puting it in will require you to have some welding done. universal main cats range from $60-$200.
