Have a 2000 Kia Sephia that failed emissions today because of code P1693. Pulled the dash and checked, the MIL bulb is present... switched it with another bulb to make sure it's working, and the bulb is fine.

However, the MIL light NEVER comes on, even when turning the key to the on position...

What is the problem if it's not the bulb?

Thanks!

Originally it gave codes P0128 and P1693... Went to Advance Autoparts and they cleared the codes... checked again a minute later and P0128 was gone, but P1693 was there.

Where all should I check for a broken wire? Right behind the dash looks good, I assume the rest of the wire runs to the computer?

Where is the computer located?

The wires behind the dash are good, I double checked. Disconnected the battery for a half hour, hooked it back up and drove it around a bit, stopped by Autozone and it's still pulling P1693...

Guy at autozone said it sounds like the computer is fried... nice.

Any other suggestions?

the ecu is under the dash. if you look behind the radio the ecu is there. your ecu is not fried though. The car wouldnt run at all if it was.. I dunno... maybe relace the bulb? its a long shot..

Ok... I disconnected the instrument cluster, connected a wire from the seat belt wire to the plug in for the MIL light... plugged the harness back in, and as expected, the seat belt light and MIL light came on... which confirms that the bulb is good as is the wiring in the instrument cluster...

So now, I know the problem lies in either the ECU, the wiring in the dash, or the fuse box...

I checked the fuse box, but the cover is gone, so I do not know where the fuse is supposed to go... I only have 10 fuses in the drivers panel fuse box when I am supposed to have 11... I tried moving some around, while turning the ignition on, and none of them turned on the MIL... soooo...

What do I do now?

Ok the wife has the digicam but let me see if I can diagram.

There are 12 total slots arranged as such....

(10amp)(10amp)(10amp)
(15amp)(10amp)(10amp)
(20amp)(15amp)(10amp)
(EMPTY)(10amp)(EMPTY)

That is how my fuses are laid out on the drivers side interior fuse panel... should there be two empty fuse spots like that?

Further information, bought a multimeter... took a reading at the plug in for the dash.... the Seatbelt light wire gives a reading of 12.7 volts, the oil light wire gives a reading of 5.8 volts, and the MIL light wire does not give a reading...

It sounds, to me anyways, that power is not getting from the ECU to the dash...so I was going to attempt to trace the wire from the ECU to the dash, but it looks like the ecu wires go through the firewall into the engine bay... is this correct?

Seeing as I'm not too electronically inclined... is there any other tests I can do with my multimeter to isolate the problem?

With my father on the phone, hooked the dash back up and tested the yellow wire coming into the dash from the fuse box for power...it read 12v give or take, then double checked the wire from the dash to the computer... no go.

Sounds like the connection is lost in there somewhere. Any ideas on where the orange/black dash wire connects to the brown/white ecu wire?
