2001 Sephia has erratic overheating problem. Water is 6 months old. Drive to work is 50 miles. No problems on morning drive but drive home car overheats. Takes 25-30 miles for temp to start rising. By time get home temp gauge is just under max position. Both electric fans are working. Hose has pressure. Coolant circulating. Car has 110,000 miles. Was thinking too much coolant and not enough water. Need ideas and help to solve problem. Live in Dallas and days are in the 100s this time of year. A/C on or off makes no difference. The drive in the morning temp gauge sits right on the normal mark with no movement. On drive home once temp starts the climb above normal temp will climb during driving but comes down at stops.

Welcome!

If the Thermostat is really opening, the coolant is circulating, also both fans are working, and the hoses are alright; the only causes for such overheating, that I could think, are:

► Worn Water Pump, about to fail...

► Blown Head Gasket, passing exhaust heat to coolant passages.

► Clogged Radiator.

Such situations will require further diagnosis... in similar situations, I remove the Thermostat to be completely Sure that it is Working and there is no air trapped on the system, then check if temperature normalizes; if not, then do a good chemical cleanup of the Radiator, using Radiator Flush, and pour fresh coolant mixed 50% with water, or use premixed coolant, drive the Sephia still without the Thermostat, and see if the Temperature Normalizes; if nothing changes, then you might do a Compression test on the cylinders to see if the Headgasket isn't damaged, finally, if everything is allright, I would remove the Waterpump to be sure if it is alright, or about to fail.

Good Luck, Kind Regards.

Water pump is 6 months old. I can check t-stat but not thinking it is culprit because it does not overheat during the morning drive. Coolant was changed with new water pump
With the lower ambient temperature in the morning the thermostat would not need to open much, but as the temperature rises the thermostat would be expected to open further or even full open, which it might not be doing.

Clogged radiator - check that the outside air flow passages are clean and clear (no spider webs) and the inside needs to be clean with no corrosion fouling.

Ok...i will check it. Morning temps are in the 80s, afternoon temps in lower 100s. Drive time is about the same....around 75 minutes. Water temp goes up when moving, down when stopped. No air pockets in coolant, remove radiator cap and see coolant circulating. No oil in coolant and no coolant in oil. Smooth idle and acceleration.
