The non-starting happened once again at the (almost) identical place. This time I noticed, thanks to Wishy, that the key warning light didn't light up. So I was prepared and did not attempt to start the car but took the key out, waited a minute, inserted the key and "Hey Presto" the key light came on and the engine roared into life!
On taking in to my local dealer a technician could not diagnose any fault with the car. The battery was fully charged and everthing was OK. I was told to use my spare key and carry both keys with me in case the car refused to start with one key, then I could try the other, and hopefully it would!
In future I am keeping a close watch for the key light when starting the car. Unfortunately this has made me (and my wife) rather obsessive about the key light. Besides, we both find difficulty starting the car with fingers crossed!
