Gas door replacement?

Gas door replacement - HOW TO.

So the girlfriend went to the gas station and started filling up. Ran inside to get a drink and then hopped in the car to take off... forgetting the pump was still in the car :(

LUCKILY it did not damage the pump or scratch the car in any way! Unfortunately, it broke off the gas door :(

The arm is plastic and looks like it will be 1 whole piece to replace (arm and door). Question, has anyone already replaced one of these, or have a manual section describing how to replace?

EDIT:
I painted and replaced the door/lid. Instructions with pictures start in post 16.

Thank you!!
Would you happen to have the directions for the "hood door". That's the part that broke off. The attached look like it was just for the filler assembly.

looks like your handle is apt for your girlfriend. Not surprising with the absent minded females.
Kinda rude.. She's never done anything like that prior.

She had a lot on her mind as she rescued a stray dog on the side of the road. Dropped it off at the vet. Long story short she was getting cash from inside the gas station to cover the days vet bills and brought the dog home instead of giving it over to animal control.

So we're now a temp home for an amazing German Shepherd while we find him a permanent home.

This is a situation where plastic is a good thing. Metal would have bent and likely done more damage in the process. The good news is these are typically straightforward repairs.

A friend of mine drove off with one in there, the nozzle disconnected at the breakaway and she drove around like that all day, nozzle sticking out and hose flapping down the road. She only realized it when the gas station called her at home. (Small town, everyone knows everyone.)

In the short term, you could probably get away with gluing it back on. There's enough jagged surface area for glue to adhere to, although the elements would likely keep it from ever being a permanent repair.

Got the new door ($75) and went to a local paint shop who can match/paint code into an aerosol spray can. It was a three step (technically four if you count primer) paint. The 3 cans from the store ran about $70. The cans were a white base, the pear, and the gloss clear coat.

First is the door/lid straight from the dealer.

Next I used some self etching primer that I already had in the garage.

Then here is the new painted door (left) compared to the original that came on the car (right).

Next step was to remove the old broken piece that was left over to get the new one in.

1) There are 4 philps head screws holding everything down, remove these.

2) Pry the plastic "retaining clip" out

3) You have to now remove the whole inner assembly of the gas door. Make sure you press in the latch release when removing this. Its pretty straight forward, tug and a pry here and there.

4) On the top there is a clear sticker you need to remove to gain access.

5) I took a flat head screw driver and pried the black clip up, so I could pull the while swinging arm out of the retaining hole.

From here I basically just did everything in reverse.

Went back together very easy and the new door closes flush and opens once the release latch is pressed inside the car.

The paint came out pretty good. Ill have to buff and wax it after it cures longer, but all and all we're both happy with how it turned out :)

Just trial and error haha. Start with small unimportant things (not even necessarily car related). I think the "main" other items ive painted were the mirror caps on my Subaru.

Ive got matching mirror caps my STi. Red powdercoated summer wheels with a factory red mirror cap (painted from the dealer). Then I powdercoated my winter wheels a candy purple. Went to the same paint shop and got them to match the wheel color into an aerosol so I could match mirrors with wheels year round lol.
