No low gear

Google is no help for this. All of my other cars had a D2 for when you are driving down a steep grade. My 2017 Sorento doesn't have this. Is it handled automagically or do I have to do something different?

it's like driving a manual you select the gear that is appropriate for the grade your driving up or down, no one can tell you which gear to select without being on that same road with you.
A few years back I drove up and down the Whiteface Mountain and used 2nd and 1st gear of the manual section of my auto. I think that was about a 12% grade on that, one of the steepest in the US.

Start your reading on page 5/13 in your owners manual to 5/16, it will give you all the details of the operation of the 6-speed auto.

Thanks very much. I read those pages and more just now. They did not answer my original question but the first paragraph of your reply above did.

I used the manual once in a while when it's snowy (better engine braking), what I did notice is that I can't shift to 1st when you're still going too fast.

If you pull up in 1st and the revs get too high, will it automatically bump you to 2 or will it just stay in the rev limiter?

It would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic operation of your Sorento. For the safety of others and yourself. Things like the Correct placement for the jack on the vehicle, lowering of spare tire etc. Is very helpful to know prior to having to have a reason for using it.

Just trying to help out our fellow Sorento owners and suggest other things to help you be aware of.

Safe Travels.

I agree with the need to familiarise prior to the actual need. however in attempting to do a seasonal tyre change I read the manual on jacking up the car. It referred to the notches on the underside where the jack sits. on a dark night at the side of a highway changing a flat tyre and not the luxury of time, mistakes are more likely - a piece of reflective tape at each of the two notches will likely make the area easier to find.

My real gripe is with the handle provided with the OEM jack. the uneven lengths on the handle make the task of turning the screw harder than it needs to be. to solve that I bought a 2-ton jack but learned later that its max height is 13in while the Sorento requires one with a max lift height of 16in (?). Or should that be 17in?

I even have a copy on my phone for quick checks...and you can see it also online if prefer not to download it:

I've gone through the entire thread a couple of times, can't beat the sarcasm, still makes me laugh.

Forgot to add my 2 cents, this is completely common sense. It all depends how you feel the vehicle is responding. Only the driver can tell what's needed to tackle a steep uphill. Not sure if it's because I owned a manual car before and it pretty much forces you to use your senses to shift gears as required.

It's been a long time that D1 and D2 disappeared, since tiptronic gearbox came in, almost every vehicle has it.

As per manual:

"• In manual mode, the driver must execute upshifts in accordance with road conditions, taking care to keep the engine speed below the red zone.
• In manual mode, only the 6 forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the shift lever to the R (Reverse) or P (Park) position as required.
• In manual mode, downshifts are made automatically when the vehicle slows down. When the vehicle stops, 1st gear is automatically selected.
• In manual mode, when the engine rpm approaches the red zone shift points are varied to upshift automatically
• To maintain the required levels of vehicle performance and safety, the system may not execute certain gearshifts when the shift lever is operated.
When driving on a slippery road, push the shift lever forward into the +(up) position. This causes the transaxle to shift into the 2nd gear which is better for smooth driving on a slippery road. Push the shift lever to the -(down) side to shift back to the 1st gear."
