Back-up Camera Sucks? - 2016 ExV6

I have searched the forum, I see zero complaints about the stock back-up camera. The Canadian Ex comes with the smaller screen (non-nav unit). Coming from a 2014 Rav4 and experience with friends much older cars, I have all sorts of view-ability problems with this truck, especially with varying light conditions. The Rav4 picture was great at almost all times.

Under ideal conditions, basic daylight, performs well enough. Night transitions from light to dark (entering garage), afternoon sun levels (low level and glare), sun to shade transitions, sometimes I can barely discern anything safely enough where I look over my shoulder to be sure. Sometimes it seems the screen switches between two different light levels (light/dark). I have tried setting the screen permanently to 'night' or 'day' settings, does not seem to make a difference to the back-up camera.

I would try and get pictures but it is hard to replicate and is subjective. Is anyone else experiencing similar deficiencies in their trucks? Any comparisons to previous ownership to compare to Kia's implementation? Want to know if I am the only one or is it just a quirk of this car.

Thanks in advance.

Is the back-up camera lens dirty?

I don't have a problem with mine. I even have the non nav unit with the smaller screen and it's never been bad. I will say, I felt like it was even more clear after I tinted my windows and the interior was darker / screen seemed brighter.

I have the 2017 SX v6 with tech package so I'm not sure if it is a different screen or camera but mine has been great. I am surprised with how well it works in bad weather and in dark

I have the EX with the small screen and never had a problem. Lately it's just very dirty because of the snow but a little wipe and it's great again, even in dusk or dark conditions.

Simply you should have taken the larger screen. Small screens will never be as clear as large ones

I agree with op. It's not great. I have a sx v6 with large screen and the backup camera is not very good at night. Daytime is Ok but night time it gets very grainy. To solve this problem I replaced the crappy reverse lights with bright LEDs (5000k).

Don't agree. It's pretty good. You need to get it checked at the dealer

Garage

No complain!
Maybe replace better backup bulb(LED? even HID? ) to improve night vision if you have a problem at night.....

My suggestion is the same as @Foxconn - the pictures from the back up camera are distorted / fuzzy when snow /salt and sometimes ice collect on it. Keep a cloth handy to wipe the camera's outer surface. It goes back to giving you sharp pictures (admitted i have the 8in screen). i havent used any cleaner (e.g. windex) just wiped it.
