I am new to the world of Kia (drove Honda and Acura for 20+ years), but I am loving how my Kia Sorento drives and the gas mileage is better than my old Honda Odyssey. I need to take my 2016 Sorento in for the first maintenance -- I assume I need the oil changed and the tires rotated (about 9000 miles on it). Do I need anything else? I don't want to get services that I don't need and can't afford. TIA
you assume it needs an oil change?...ya i'd say its due after 9000miles. I'm really hoping somebody put synthetic it in at the factory but I got my doubts on that.
9000 miles is an unacceptably long distance before first service regardless of oil type really.
RTFM...its all in there, recommended service intervals, oil types, everything and anything you need to know.
as was mentioned everything you want to know is in the maintenance section of your owners manual. You need to follow that to maintain your warranty (just like any other manufacturer) so make sure you keep records. It's only necessary to do what is stated at the mileage/time intervals specified, if anything else is suggested over and above that then that's your call but it's not necessary. Also read your warranty book which will tell you what is covered, what isn't and what is your responsibility.
Please add the year and model of Sorento you have in your drive details, just saying KIA Sorento isn't going to help us much when you post further comments or ask questions.
Do you know what motor you have? If it's the 2.0 turbo you should change the oil more often like every 3,500 miles. An oil change is one of the least expensive maintenance routines you should do and will pay off in the long run. Keep records for when/if you resell.
Kiss that engine warranty goodbye...... WHAT FOOLISHNESS..... YOU DON'T CHANGE THE OIL IN TIME IN A BRAND NEW CAR? What were you thinking? One of the best selling points of a Kia is the warranty. LOL!!!
I can only assume your job is not working directly with the public. Calm down, it is not the end of the world if she didn't get her first oil change done exactly when the KIA book said she had to. It is posts like yours that ensures her first post will probably be her last.
OP, your dealer should tell you 1st oil change time and you might forget or ignore because they would recommend every 3750 miles oil change to make $$, but manual said only for severe driving condition.
Regular is every 7500 miles. My dealer put sticky on inside wind shield when I left there.
Just change oil ASAP and visit dealer to change oil at 15000 mile. Tell them this is 2nd time and 1st done by yourself(keep receipt).
That is all good but if there is ever major engine issues (related to parts lubricated by oil), KIA would be foolish not to request all oil change receipts and check when they were done. They would see the first interval was not only missed but missed by a significant amount and could easily refuse to pay for the related work.
There is really no excuse for waiting 9,000 miles and act clueless like you have no idea when service is due. It isn't like this person has lived in a 3rd world country their entire life and they are a first time car owner. I just don't get the OP.... so foolish
And correct me if I am wrong, but the turbo needs a change at least every 5,000 miles (in the US) but the 2.4 and the 3.3 are 7,500.
Welcome to the forum first of all. "About 9,000 miles" is a little over for your first oil change. I would immediately get it changed at a non KIA shop. Have them use regular oil. Then I would have it changed again at about 12,000 miles and this time have synthetic oil used. Tire rotation can be done anywhere between 7,000 and 15,000 IMHO for the first time.
I wouldn't worry about warranty issues. The chances of an engine going bad is pretty slim first of all. Try to ignore some of the negative posts, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Relax, get your oil changed, everything will be fine.
Don't scare the man shitless. KIA would rarely if ever void warranty unless negligence is obvious. You can always claim that you performed oil changes yourself and one 'lost' receipt would never void your warranty.
So go ahead, change the oil, put synthetic just in case you 'forget' to change it in time again as synthetic lasts longer. Also make sure to set maintenance interval in your Sorento dashboard computer and don't neglect it when it will prompt you to do it next time.
You need proof. Doing it yourself and not having receipts is not proof. Why should KIA pay for a warranty issue when the owner was negligent? Yes, one lost receipt (or rather failure to meet the interval) could easily cause a warranty issue not to be covered. Hopefully a warranty issue will never creep up by why would anyone risk a 100,000 mile warranty is beyond me.
I just don't understand how someone can buy a $30,00-$40,000 SUV and not change the oil per manufactures specifications..... or even know what the proper interval is. It isn't like they have been riding exclusively on a camel and didn't know one of those newfangled vehicles required oil changes at a specified interval.....
I fail to see where politics has any bearing to auto subjects, SOME folks that suffer OCD can be rather harsh in wording when things are not done according to written established procedures. Just glad the OP and her ride are around after the RECENT weather patterns that hit Florida are still around and not done in by the high waters that they got! And I thought this forum was here to HELP fellow kiadrivers, NOT CONDEMN them!
I am one of the more helpful people on this 2016+ Sorento forum. Instead of sugar coating things and saying everything will be OK, helping a clueless individual understand the gravity of the situation is much more helpful IMO.
As for the Warranty.... it is cut and dry. They may be kind and let something slide.... they may not. Not a gamble I am going to take.

@FLMommyof2 - FWIW i went into the dealer I bought the vehicle from for the first oil change not knowing what to expect (like you a first time Kia owner). The service managers said it only needed an oil change (cost $50 which is about $10 more than other dealers and independent places here charge). in another thread in this forum people speak of having to remove a cover that allows access to unscrew the drain plug. which meant I could rationalise the extra amount ). Hope this helps you. Cheers
If one dealer is so picky about that and demand all proof maintenance for warranty work, try to go another and others. Miss one oil change, not gonna f*** up car. Just IMO. OP will learn lesson.....
Long time lurker, first time poster...
I am considering the purchase of a Sorento next spring so I have been following this forum for a while.
I am curious as to what, "fuel additive *1" (as listed in the NORMAL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE) in the previous post, is and why is it necessary to add it to the fuel every 12,000km /7,500miles?
as you are from Canada I would suggest you go to the KIA Canada website and download a copy of the owners manual for the Sorento and then you can read about everything in detail on the Sorento before you purchase it - its a good way to find out about many things that you don't see in other resources.
To answer your question, you will notice in the info about the #1 which is referring to a footnote with regards that which states: "If TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is not available, one bottle of additive is recommended."
I will double check but I think it is their recommendation to use a KIA fuel system additive if you do not consistently use top tier gasoline. I recall them wanting you to do this once every 7500 miles.
Edit....yes see page 1-4 and 7-11 in the manual. I am on a tablet and I cannot seem to get it to copy and paste.
Direct injection engines are more prone to carbon build-up, especially on the intake valve, so they want you using a top tier fuel which may in theory help... though I am not so sure it'll do much of anything. I always try to use top tier fuel as it certainly cannot hurt. I have been using some Techron every 7500 miles but again I almost always use a top-tier fuel.
Thanks BrianC302 (I can't quote posts on the forum just yet) I am not that familiar with direct injected engines and there requirements so I appreciate everyone's input/opinion.
I will "stay tuned" for further info and comments on the 2016+ Sorento.
May be a rhetorical question - is this "top tier" an additive to fuel which retailers may or may not choose to add? so in the latter case if they didnt they wouldnt show on the list and might just add their own version of this? for instance one Canadian retailer not on the list does say this on their site Clean Fuel For Your Vehicle | Canadian Tire Gas Plus Station
this 2 items from FAQ of the toptier gas likely answers my question (pasted without permission and link to the site is FAQs | Top Tier Gas). Note the "I" in the below questions refers to the fuel marketing company
Can I advertise that I am better than TOP TIER™ if I use 5x the EPA detergent concentration?
The TOP TIER™ program is not just about a higher detergency rate - it also validates effectiveness of the chemistry of the detergent. It is a robust engine cleanliness and performance specification. Merely adding more detergent does not necessarily mean a fuel is better. Fuel marketers can meet the TOP TIER™ specification requirements and offer TOP TIER™ certified gasoline by using approved detergency additives at approved treat rates and becoming licensed.
If I increase my treat rate above the rate in my TOP TIER™ agreement, do I need to provide performance test data?
That depends on the level of increase chosen. The TOP TIER™ license agreement states a specific minimum detergent treat rate. You are allowed to use up to three times that specific minimum detergent treat rate per the license agreement. Any concentration above 3X the license agreement amount would require performance testing to that treat rate.
