I have always changed oil on my cars within the 1st 1000 miles but this one I decided to go with the mfg recommendations. What is your strategy? Is there anything like breakin oil from the factory that mandates factory recommendations?

I went in at 5K kms as I have the turbo. I bought synthetic separately and my plan was to drain the free oil change and put it in my 2009 Rav 4. Then put in the synthetic.
I only drove 40 kms before draining the kia oil and man that oil was so black I didn't use it.

I changed mine the 1st time at 1,250 miles, used dino oil for that change to better seat the rings.
Used manual gear selector to gently use engine compression to help seat the rings during break-in.

Then went full synthetic to 2nd oil change at 4,000 miles. I will stick to the Canada KIA requirements of changing every 4,000 miles (6,000 kms)

Shortly after buying my 2014 Sportage SX I dropped the oil @500mi's then again @ 2,000 and thereafter I followed every 3,ooo mi's. All changes were done with 100% synthetic oil and OEM filters.
I have found that GDI engines are very tough on oil..and turbo versions even more so. With that in mind I stay with the factory "Severe Duty" recommended oil change intervals. For me 5qts full syn for just under $20.00 (Walmart)and OEM filters for $4.50 (Ebay) I just sleep better.

Here's some interesting info.

I agree GDI engines are extremely hard on oil. I dropped the factory oil at around 800 km and like yourself I go with the severe service intervals.
I alternate between Amsoil Signature Series and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Installing a quality oil separator is also a good idea on GDI engines.
I recently installed a UPR 4 stage separator on mine.

We have 2 Kia cars where one has GDI and the other has MPI engines.
I change synth oil in GDI every 3800mi (6K km) and MPI - 5300mi (8K km).
First oil change on both was at 3K miles.

I have done the first oil change at the 1,000 mile with all my Kia's but I talked to the service department right after buying the 2017 Sorento to see why Kia changed the first oil change recommendation from 1,000 miles to 3,500 miles. I was informed that Kia has moved from a non synthetic "break-in oil" to synthetic right from the start and by doing that, it increased the first oil change to 3,500 miles. Based on that, I'm sticking with 3,500 miles as the first oil change.

+1.

i just learned (from the picture i posted) that the 2.0L engine under severe conditions has a time interval of 3 months for service #1 . the 3.3L engine under severe conditions is 6 months. the salesperson delivering the vehicle knew the engine on my vehicle was 3.3L (being a 3-row vehicle). i figure front line staff are encouraged to have customers do work sooner being business for the dealership ..........

I change mine every 5,000 miles or so. I don't hit it exact, but somewhere between 4,600 and 5,200 between changes is where I generally land. I used to change oil in my vehicles every 3,000 miles but that was 30 years ago. Modern day engines certainly do not need oil that often. I guess if you constantly tow on gravel roads for 3,000 miles you may want to change it, but other than that you are wasting money IMHO.
