Remove accessory blanks

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove an accessory button blank without chewing up the edge or the dash? Does it have to be pried from the front with a plastic removal tool or can it be popped out from behind the dash somehow? I'm speaking specifically of the blanks to the left of the steering wheel, above the fuse access, on a Canadian '16 Sorento LX+. Thanks in advance!

I'll be having a brake controller installed and this is where I'd like the knob/dial that controls it (Redarc's Tow Pro Elite controller). I've popped the fuse door and looked upwards. The best that I can tell is that these aren't simply an empty face of plastic, but actually a hollow cavity a little over an inch thick. I only have my illumination level control on the top level (2 large empty bays) and a fuel door release on the lower level (1 small empty bay), but now I'm not sure how if each level is connected through a main bracket or something. Any thoughts?
