Just bought a new 2016 Sorento, love it! BUT, my wife needs to use a cushion on the passenger seat, which "deactivates" the passenger air bag. Seems like the ODS system thinks she's not sitting properly. The dealer says there's nothing they can do. They suggest she sits in the rear seat?? Really! Does anyone know of any fix for this??
Thanks for the info IK. It seems that the sensors not only detect weight but also many other factors, so sitting on a cushion would deactivate the airbag. I did speak to Kia customer service corp. and they said the same thing the dealer said, "there's nothing we can do!"
At least, MFG OBD or coding tool should have option for killing sound? Most can-gateway equipped cars could have those options? Vag cars w/ VCDS can access to airbag controller and tweak something. However, disabling a safety feature is never a good idea.
Even dealer could do, but they will not do for customers because of regulations.
I also need a cushion when I am seated in a vehicle. The salesman and the manager at the Kia dealership were very aware of this, because sometimes I need additional pillows for my back. No one told me that if I use a cushion, the air bag is turned off. I called the salesman that the air bag sign read "off" whenever I sat in the passenger seat. He said that I should bring the car to the dealer's garage and have it looked at. I also talked with someone at the Kia toll free number, and was told by the representative that he had never heard of this problem. But, here it is, 8 months following the first thread about this topic. The representative gave me a "case" number, and said I need to go to the dealership first.

I have the same problem, i add a cushion and seat cover on the passenger seat, no matter who sits on it, it shows "off"...This is the most ridiculous design...I would definitely re-think if I knew this is the case before I bought the car. Never paid attention of this...
I'm sure all of these things are government regulated. There is no way a car dealer is going to disable them as it sets them up for some serious liability.
And remember, it is an automobile, not your favorite living room recliner! LOL
I had a similar problem where the light would not go out when someone sat in the passenger seat on our 09 spectra and it turned out to be a defective seat sensor, code B1448. got it replaced by dealer under extended warranty. BUT yours has a redesigned sensor and unfortunately even more sensitive to the previously listed seating conditions.
