Car Play/Android Auto?

I know the 2016 Optima has an option to use Car Play or Android Auto instead of UVO (which is awesome since I'm not a huge UVO fan). I read somewhere that there was a possibility they would roll that out to other 2016 models, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

Has anyone heard anything similar that would make it more or less likely that KIA would add that via firmware to other UVO head units from this year's models?

CarPlay Coming?

I've been watching this closely. There has been some speculation that an update would enable earlier 2016 Kia models (other than the Optima) to get CarPlay. However, according to Alex on Autos, Kia has been vague on whether this will happen or not. While it was earlier speculated by some that a CarPlay update would come to earlier 2016 models, it's starting to look less likely as time moves on.

There is supposed to be an UVO update coming in December. I say if CarPlay (and Auto Android) do not come by then, we can just forget about these features coming to our 2016 Sorentos. Apparently, in the case of Apple, CarPlay has gone through so many internal updates and changes (according to the Car Stereo Chick) that some CarPlay head unit manufacturers are also unclear if they will be able to offer some features that were initially advertised but not delivered. From this, I think Kia may be waiting for the dust to settle before they do a massive rollout of CarPlay. This may lend support to the idea that Kia is less likely to release a UVO update that enables CarPlay for already released 2016 Kia models due to potential hardware limitations--I'm speculating on this. In the end, I've already been researching CarPlay aftermarket head units, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. We'll see.

This sucks.....
Even though the app is written in Dec. 2015 I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate in that Kia and Nissan already have vehicles with Carplay/AA out (AFAIK). Granted, it's the 2016 Kia Optima, and 2016 Nissan Maxima.

The "later availability" makes it sound like as of December 2015, the Kia and Hyundai models don't have it yet (and they do), and the info under Nissan neglects to mention the Maxima.

So I'm assuming/hoping:
a) it's just that: A rumor (it is titled macrumors after all)
b) The article was written earlier in the year and not properly updated.

I installed the update on my 2016 KIA Sorrento SX last month, it seems to have added an option to set up Car Play, im not sure what Car Play is, i use Pandora and XM, not sure if I need even another music service in the car but plan on figuring out what it is.

@mike1 did you install the new 9.5 map? And bundled firmware ST.UM.USA.E483.151002 - assuming you are in the US? Do you have photo of the firmware version and what mention of carplay there is?

@Scottie, unless you have a technical problem with the firmware, I think you'll have to buy any update... but the release notes don't talk about Car Play feature (or actually its Android Auto I care about). Don't get me wrong, I think it would be great if Kia rolled out these features to all 2016 owners for free if the head unit is capable... but that may be a dream.

I do have a UVO firmware issue and I've been trying to get KIA Oakland to resolve my UVO XM satellite traffic data map problem I've posted about before, and they are not willing to engage me on 'trying the latest' firmware to see if it resolves it. I have older firmware dating from around same time as you Mar/April 2015 ST.UM.USA.E459.150108. I need to talk to Kia customer service again and see what they think about the dealer's stance, or if I ordered the v9.5 update myself and it fixed my problem then would they reimburse me...

Alternatively I may sit and wait for some positive v9.5 news from others here or UVO android auto news before doing more.

Hello Bev,

Thanks for the response. Yes I think you and I got the vehicle around the same time so there is a high probability we have the same firmware (March 2015). I am assuming our firmware is older as they updates since then.

What are the UVO XM satellite traffic data map issues you're having? I loved the traffic data map I had when I was on the 3 month XM trial when I first got my car, but the map stopped showing the traffic indicators once my trial ran out. I am assuming that if you want the traffic data map (the red, yellow and green highlights to show how bad the traffic is). Do you have a subscription to XM?

Thanks Jason, maybe one of the previous updates fixed it, or not, I don't know, but that's my point: if KIA wanted to troubleshoot it they should try it with the latest software as the first step. I don't want to buy the map for $200 myself just to try the new firmware.

I just received the 9.5 (96S57) version of the map and am going through the update process right now. I'm about 10 minutes into what it says to be a 30 minute process. Snapping photos along the way. Will share if I find anything about CarPlay as options during install. Fingers crossed.

Version Details (Current):
-S/W Version: ST.UM.USA.E469.150205
-Firmware Version: MICOM.ST.UM.USA.3053.141204
-Navi App Ver.: ST4.NAM.KMC.150129.68074
-Map Ver.: NAM.07.47.65.501.001

Will post updated versions after I'm done.

I finally got time to go through all the menus and settings after installing the 9.5 update last week and don't see anything that I didn't see before. But I don't have an iPhone so I don't know if carplay is something that would come up if you pair an iPhone since the only way to see the siri eyes free feature is to pair an iPhone. However, since it is Android, I extracted the system image on my PC and looked through all the apps, the one for Siri is in there, but didn't see anything that looked like it would have been related to carplay.

These are all the Kia specific apps installed:
