Latest Maps Version?

My SD card has a model number 96554-C6000.

There's a matrix of versions here: SD Matrix

Is this not the latest maps version? Is the UVO software version updated separately from the maps version?

I guess my basic question is: do I have the latest software and maps?

This is on the US SX AWD

The V9.0 update was released in June. If you purchased your Sorento before then, you would have V8.5...which is what the part # of your card corresponds to. If you bought it after June then your vehicle was manufactured before June and the dealer didn't update the maps.

There has been no UVO software update so far but it would be updated at the same time as the map if there was.

Great info, thanks. I bought the car in August, so I guess my dealer gave me an old SD card? The card wasn't in the car when I bought it - it was in the manual, so the dealer put it in the car for me when they turned it over to me.

I brought up the software version screen and got this for the s/w version: ST.UM.USA.E469.150205
According to this matrix online SD Matrix it looks like that correlates to V9.0. (screenshot attached)
So could it be that I have the latest software version but not the latest maps? And if so, do I have any recourse to get the latest maps from the dealer without having to buy a new SD card at $189 or so?

Kindof weird - Kia just called me after I posted to the Customer Care site this morning, so that's pretty fast. They said they'd check if there's a newer maps version (we all know there is but that's okay let them check), and that they'd then get back to me letting me know if I can purchase the newer version and then have Kia reimburse me for the cost. They said there's no way for them to give me the new version directly. Kindof weird but if that's how it goes I'm more than okay with that.

Sounds like Kia is doing pretty well on this issue. Forget dealers; their 'dedication' is over as soon as you sign the contract.

Let me give you my experience with Ford. I bought a 2014 Escape a year ago. I quickly noticed the maps where not up to date (a highway finished three years before did not even show up). Spoke to dealer; tough luck. Spoke to Ford.ca; too bad. $179 to get the real maps. I bought the maps and guess what; they are still not up to date. Found the site where they create the maps and there is a functionality there common people can send map update. Good, I will be the good guy and update the maps on my region. I log in and guess what; the maps on their site are all up to date! But they still send you maps that are behind by two years.

I am trading for a Sorento SX+ (in Canada). Checked their maps and they are pretty decent; could not find any new road that would be missing. The fact that Kia is accepting to send you the up-to-date maps is pretty good. Way better than Ford!

Just off the phone with Kia customer service.
My map SD card is the 96554-C6000 vintage. Looking up SD Matrix there would appear to be newer versions namely C6001 (V.9.0) and C6002 (V9.5).
Stonewall NO to my request for the newest map software.
"Your vehicle had the most recent map software at the time of purchase" was the official script that was recited several times.
Polite and businesslike agent, but absolutely no deviation from the "no free map update for you".
Curious how many folks have actually received a complimentary up to date version of the map SD card.

These map updates should really be free. If you buy a Garmin GPS unit at $150, you get free map updates for life! But if you buy one for a car that cost you over $1,000, you get to pay $150 or more every year to get the latest maps.

KIA is not any worst than the other ones, and even better because at least they make sure you have the up to date maps at the time you buy your vehicle (better than Ford who just give you whichever old SD card happens to be laying around).

I hope manufacturers rethink this. At least, they could include free map updates for the first buyer.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! I started the update on my commute to work this morning. Followed the directions step for step word for word. Everything went smoothly until update 4 of 5 or 5 of 5 (last I looked at the screen it said it was on step 4 of 5). Then I got the message

Error Code:[1312]
Updating has failed.
Please check and try again.

That message is now stuck on the screen no matter what. Now nothing on the head unit works at all. Even after shutting off the car, removing the SD card, restarting the car. The SETUP button and all other buttons are completely non-responsive. No radio, no maps, even the compass on the instrument cluster is frozen.

When I got to work this morning I read something about a tiny little reset button next to the volume knob that you can press with a paper clip. I'll have to try that after work I guess, unless anyone knows anything else I should do or try first.

EDIT: I went out to the car with a paperclip, but when I started the car everything was working fine. I checked and I'm on the correct updated SW version ST.UM.USA.E469.150205 (actually that didn't change) and the maps updated to NAM.08.41.52.591.001 and everything is fine. Also, the little reset button is in the upper right corner, just above the MAP button, not near the volume knob, although I didn't use it.

Here's my experience so far with map updates. Just purchased our Sorento last week and I checked the map version and sure enough it is old. This is due to the fact the car was built 4 months ago and that's when the SD card is shipped. I asked the dealer why the map version was old on a brand new car and they weren't any help. They said I could buy the update but I wouldn't do that on a new car.
So I followed some of your suggestions and called Kia Customer Care and they said I am eligible for a 1 time update as the car is new in Sept and the maps should be updated when purchased. They said the dealers don't do this since they have to pay for it like everyone else. They instructed me to go to MnSoft | Hyundai & Kia Map Update and order the latest maps for the car. I will then submit the receipt to Kia Canada and they will refund the money. So just about to order the maps online now and will update on the progress later. I guess the process is slightly different then in the USA but never the less seems like they will be updated.

The odd thing to me is that these maps are not downloadable on the SD card. Also why aren't updates included in the future for free or other software updates for the car? To me this should be part of the purchase just like buying a computer and getting OS updates or a phone OS upgrade.

We bought our 2016 on June 27. I noticed shortly after that there was a new map update for June 1, obviously we didn't get that with the car. I asked the dealer and the service manager called the Maps company and he was immediately denied the request for a complimentary update. I let it go after that. Then I read here that everyone who called received the update. I called kia and was rudely handled on the phone by some knucklehead that sounded like I was asking him to take the $190 out of his pocket to pay for it. He was awful. I then went online and submitted a case online. I heard nothing for over a week. I then submitted two new cases for this request online and a week later I finally got a call that they were looking into it for me. Today (the following day) I received confirmation that they are able to send this to me for free.

So that was my experience.

Whoa! I just checked the link. In Canada, they charge us $239 ($US !!!). That is just a rip-off! How could they charge so much for this! A portable Garmin unit you pay $200 for ($CA) (not for the maps; for the entire unit!) comes with free map updates for life!

At that price:
(1) I will make sure I have the most-latest-bestest maps on the vehicle before I sign for it!
(2) I will find a different way to update my maps! I am sure they can be found on ebay.

As I stated earlier, I had the same issue with FORD who refused (Dealer and Ford Canada) to give me the most updated cards at the time of purchase (I noticed this a few days after the transaction) Bought the update for $179 ($CA) and the maps were no different; entire highways finished three years before did not even show up (and no, I don't live in the Northwest Territories...)! I went on the website and found a way to send mods for their maps, but they were already in their system! So they have the updated info, but keep on selling you maps, at great cost, without the latest mods!

This is obviously just a Apple-like scam in my opinion.

Good news is I looked at the maps on the Sorento (don't know which version) and it looked pretty much up to date with the newest streets in my area.

Thank you all for the great info on this thread. It will make better prepared.

You guys must be luckier then me, after reading your posts last week i tried going to the website and registering a complaint, they never called me back. So today I called them and eventually got sent back to the dealer, actually they spoke with the dealer and then transferred me in to get me taken care of, eventually i ended up with the service manager and he informed me that I have to pay $189 plus a service charge if i want them to install the card ! He tells me KIA made a mistake and never upgrades a map on a new car and eventually they will call me and inform me of this.......

I got the same runaround three times, but I persisted. I called kia customer service and for each representative that told me no, I asked to speak with a supervisor, one guy completely denied me access to his supervisor. Eventually I got a great young lady, very reasonable and understanding of the issue. She is having the card sent to me as a one time courtesy.

Try again, elevate your request till someone complies.

A little update, yesterday afternoon I actually got contacted again by Kia customer service, again they were polite, i explained that i was stuck in the useless dealer run around and they promised to take care of this for me........ hopefully i will receive the update soon. My impression is the cars are good, the customer service hotline seems very professional and helpful. I think KIA America should focus on improving the customer service at their independent dealers as in my case they are not well presented.

Don't expect this to change before the next ice age (eh, this could be soon... ;)) Dealerships are mostly the same; their work stops when you sign at the bottom of the contract. In my search for a new mid-size SUV, I dealt with 10 different dealers (Nissan, Honda, Jeep, Chev, Kia). One Dealer Honda was great; he agreed on my price on the phone for a Pilot while another Honda dealer was playing the usual games. They were honest and I felt good dealing with them but I didn't like the Pilot minivan. One Nissan dealer was fantastic and gave me its best price off the bat, telling me this was his bottom and was not negotiable; one other Nissan dealer was $3K higher after 2 hours of games and customary stewing. I would have loved to buy from this dealership but the Pathfinder is outdated and has this d... CVT (bad for towing).

The current dealer where I am taking my Kia is the worst I have ever had to deal with. No reply on emails, not returning phone calls, truck took over two weeks to prepare (I was promised 48 hours before the "signing") and pressuring me (and I mean pressure!) to buy the extended warranty and the electronic "pill against rust" (that doesn't work). I must have said no 50 times. According to them (at least their tone) I am a fool not to take the 10 yr extended warranty, even when I try to tell them I never keep a car for more than 5 years. They even told me I could add the cost to the price of the warranty to the Kia when I sell it. I should have thought of that ;)

I made sure the map was the latest one and I told them I was not going to take the car out of the dealership unless the latest maps were in it. I had to show them how to verify the map and software versions and where to find the latest update on the net.

Picking up the truck tomorrow. I will inspect this baby like a drill sergeant :gunsmilie: because I know that when I take it out, I am on my own.

I will check again later tonight, but so far Kia themselves have not provided us at the dealer any new map software or updates whether via TSB or Campaign for the 2016 Sorento. Without a campaign being issued for it, we would have to pass the cost along to the customer, because Kia will not restitute us for it.

I called my dealership and they blew me off. So i called KIA Customer service and got the not our problem but they will follow up next week. I just thought it would go no where but KIA called me back that night and said they will ship me a new SD card and I should have it in a week. Crossing my fingers.

The confusion from KIA employees may come from believing we are asking for map updates, which are clearly not provided for free. I also believe that once supervisors understand that all we are asking for is to have up-to-date maps available at the time of purchase, they understand the logic behind the request.

As I said before in this forum, this is not unique to KIA. I know for a fact that the situation is the same with other brands. I had a very bad experience with Ford when they completely refused to provide me the latest update at the time of purchase. At least, reading this forum, it seems to me that Kia understands this and is trying to do the right thing.

KIA MAP center was saying back in April 15 that update wouldn't be available until Oct 15. I called last week and found out it was released in June 15! Nobody called me. So I got the update installed, Vers 9.5. Haven't tested it yet, but do know it didn't fix the annoying thing that comes on everytime I start my car about contacts failing to download and to contact Kia customer service. Called the update center back on this and they said they are still working on a fix and that it will be a Kia Campaign under warranty fix when it gets done.
