Driver's Seat Comfort

I am a new 2 week owner of an SXL...and first time KIA buyer. I love so much about this car...but the one thing I am noticing more is the driver seat comfort. The sides to the bottom seat that I refer to as "wings" are really firm...so I guess they'll hold up well. But so firm they are not comfortable to rest my leg on, and I feel I have to situate my legs close together to avoid my leg sitting up on the "wing". Is anyone else experiencing this?

Just wish there was a car that made seats like my La-Z-Boy!

The "wings" are bolsters that in theory keep you in place place through hard turns. However I find my right thigh a little gets sore after awhile from pressure from the bolster, notice the right side more than the left. This is particularly the case after driving for a few hours. I had this issue more noticably in another car and partially resolved by adding padding on the seat to raise my butt higher which reduced pressure from the bolster.

Have had the car for three days and put in 350 miles. I now have thigh cramps. About to drive 14 hours to Atlanta, and dreading it.

I did notice it during the test-drive, and even discussed it with dealer. Compared Sorento's seat with Cadenza's -- ridges for "thigh support" for Sorento's seat are too steep and hard, plus bottom is too narrow for my build.

I went ahead with the lease as I didn't think it would be such a big problem. I have owned many cars and driven many rentals for business. I have never ever experienced such seat discomfort.

Just called the dealer to see if I can reverse the transaction. He says "not possible", since the bank put the transaction thru, plus dealer already registered the Sorento for me.

Called Nissan (leased a '14 Pathfinder before this) and asked them for a Lease Quote.

Kia dealer did recommend I go to an upholsterer and see what they can custom-make. I got a Walmart 3" padding last night, but this is silly. It ruffles, it doesn't feel right.

Anybody has any other suggestions?

Gotta to do something. I drive about 25,000 miles/yr.

I find the seats quite large and the bolsters designed for your larger than needed american bottoms/legs. The seats would need to be more snug if it was a sporty car. I could see if I was say 250+ lbs it maybe being an issue in the KIA but with my frame I a lot of space and the bolsters are a non issue.

My Saabaru had tight seats with pretty confining bolsters for my at 6 feet and 170 lbs.

Yes, you are correct. Seat comfort varies wildly for different bodies. I am 6'1" 240 lbs, and have a sprinter's, football player's type. I am not fat, just wide muscles: still play ball two three times / week.

My thighs rest on top of ridges. I am gonna try to get a square-shape foam, 3" thick that lays over the seat-bottom. Then I will carve out the shape of the bolsters. If this helps, then I just might sow a cover around it.

Spoke with dealer. He says that since they already registered the vehicle, now my 3 day Sorento is considered a "used car" and if I tried to trade it in, I should expect $150-200 penalty / month, on top of the lease of the new car.

If padding does not work, and if I don't get any other options, I may be faced with a tough choice.

I have often had a pain in my right thigh as well. My leg would start aching after about 40 minutes. However, my last few trips have been better. I guess I must have made some adjustments to the seat height and cushion angle that helped. This has been the only car I've had issues with seat comfort.

I asked one of my guys at work, 6'2" 260-270 lbs to drive around in my Sorento. He did and found no issue. The guy is bigger than me. Granted, he just drove around the block, and maybe not enough to bother him.

I'm no expert on upholstery, but going by what I've seen on TV of how it's done, I would imagine a car upholstery shop can put in a flatter seat bottom and a new cover to fit. It's going to cost some money, but a lot less than trading the car in. Maybe a shop could even just cut down the side bolsters and fit a new cover on. I would leave a little of the bolster in though, right now I'd be sliding around a lot more on the relatively slippery leather when cornering, if my seat were completely flat. I drive an '06 Mustang as well, it's seats are much tighter fitting than the Sorento's.

The OP was from almost 2 years ago. I wonder if they ever had the issue resolved?

I have a different vehicle (Forte) but I'm having the same experience: I can't seem to get comfortable. I've never had this problem before, in every car I've ever driven I make all the adjustments typical for tall people, such as kicking the seat all the way back and reclining it slightly. But in my Kia, no matter what I do, I feel uncomfortable. It's even worse when I'm wearing more layers of clothing, such as a sweatshirt and/or a winter coat. Even my wallet feels like a baseball stuffed into my back pocket, instead of a few layers of folded up leather.

The only thing different is that this is the first new car I've ever had. I typically buy high mileage vehicles and either drive them until the wheels fall off, or until someone crashes into me and destroys it. I've only had two vehicles that had under 100k miles, and they were both still over 75k. So all those seats had seen a lot of use, and I have heard that seats become more comfortable after they have been "broken in", but I have no idea how long that takes, and information is hard to find online, as searches tend to bring up information about engine break in or child car seats instead.

However, I do feel like the seat is a bit more comfortable after 900 miles compared to how it felt at 100, but I could just be getting used to it.

The driver's seat on my 2017 SX have simply marvelous. I'm guessing the 2016 redesign stepped up the game big time regarding seat design. "Alex on Autos" review of the 2016 model mentions the seat design update as well.
