Went to change the oil in my 2016 Sorento.
Got a big surprise.
They don't have access panels in the shield like they had on earlier models.
I think someone at Ford is working for Kia now.
A better idea. lol
Can you elaborate on this a bit more please? And, if you don't mind me asking, how many miles did you go before a change and what kind of oil did you use? Thank you!
Suggest update your profile to show country you are from, what specific Sorento have you got, especially the engine in this context. What specific earlier model are you referring to. Two of the 2016 engines have been around since at least the 2014 model year. The 2.0 Turbo is new to Kia. The 3.3 was new in 2014, not sure how long the 2.4 has been around.
On some Kia's there is a plastic shield under the engine. There were access doors in it to get to the oil drain plug and oil filter so the panel did not have to be removed to do an oil and filter change. On this 2016 Sorento with the 2.4L engine you have to remove 17 bolts and drop the panel. No access doors.
After break-in with conventional oil with break-in oil I use Valvoline SYNpower.
I usually do a change between 3000/4000 miles.
Thanks for clarifying. I have the Kia Service Plan where owners get free oil changes for a period of time. They told me they use conventional oil (5W-20) and although the standard is an oil change every 3,000 miles, I believe the handbook says something like 5,000-10,000 or something like that.
Wow would that ever piss off my 10 minute quick oil change place I take all my cars to for oil changes - I'm just getting the first oil change on my '15 3.3L V6 done by the dealer tomorrow (5500mi/9000km) as they threw it in at purchase time - but I'll be going to my normal 10 minute oil change place going forward - they are a fair bit more expensive (full syn oil change is $80+tax) but no appointment, no wait, sit in car for 10 minutes while the crew of 6 people attack the car and do their 30 point inspection, etc... don't even have to get out to pay - well worth the extra couple $. I guess I should look underneath and see what I've got - if it's like you are saying the '16 2.4L is, with that many bolts to be removed, I will try to plan to go for my future quickie changes during off-peak times and apologize profusely for my difficult car.
You can argue with some about oil and oil changes until the cows come home.
After a break-in period with conventional oil mixed with break-in oil I use a
5w-20 synthetic. Valvoline SYNpower. I try to change the oil and filter around every 3000 miles. Sometimes I forget but try to get it changed before 4000. I also use OME filters. I don't no if the metal seal on the drain plug have been a problem but my dealer gives a new one free with every filter. Maybe someone on here knows. The dealer said to change it every few oil changes.
Funny thing, the dealer who gives out the free drain plug washer with the Sorento oil filter only charges $6.60 and the dealer that doesn't give out one with a filter sale charges $8.50.
Stopped in the Kia dealership to get some parts for another Kia I own and I asked if they had any crush washers for the Sorento oil drain plug. I just wanted a few to have on hand and the parts guy gave me a handful of them, no charge. I have enough for years now.
that's great customer service and probably cost them next to nothing. My dealership charges over $3 for a freakin crush rings. Yeah i work for high exotic brand and we get away with these, but still, parts guys are so retarded. I have worked for multiple dealers past 10 years, and it seems like Parts Dept have the same culture.
I ran into some bad luck the other day when I stopped by my local Valvoline only to be told that they don't have the information required to service my 2016 Sorento. They didn't know what oil, how much of it to put in, and what oil filter my car needed so they sent me on my way. Grr...
Just looked it up,online, the Purolator filter for my 3.3l is PL26127, there are a ton of cross matches..... automobile manufacturers dont invent "new" oil filters, they select one from a catalog.
I just ordered a shop manual, i suspect that the new sorento is now like many other cars and the oil is meant to be extracted from the top, just like the automatic transmission fluid.
I just bought a complete shop manual (over 3000 pages !) online and found the same thing. My Mercedes has a drain plug as well but you still pump the oil out the top. I need to check if the KIA oilpan has a baffle which gets in the way of completely draining the oil from the top, i have not bothered to look at it yet as its still under 2000 miles. a quick look at the manual indicates the oil filter is bottom mounted as well and so changing from the top may be academic anyway.
For you DIY guys I might suggest using one of these http://www.qwikvalve.com/fumoto-f106n-valve.html
I have used this item for many years and find them a great time saver....just add a flex tube and drain into a jug....no mess--no worry about drain plugs and washers.
I attached an old fuel pump to the drain hose and can remove the oil in a few minutes
Model # F106n seams to fit most Kia and Hyundai cars
When I removed the "infamous" 17 bolt splash guard to change the oil on my 2016 Sorento I noticed a few foam rubber pieces fell out from somewhere around the transmission. Would anyone know what they're for and where they go? It looks like they may have been used to keep contaminants out of the transmission vent holes, not sure though.
I did my oil change with a pump from the top and it works just fine. The oil filter is located on the top of the engine on my 3.3 L so there is never a need to get under the car for a routine oil change. I would imagine most oil change places do it this way routinely once they discover the cover on the bottom.
sorry I have been overseas. I really don't remember where I found it, it was on ebay,it looks like a digital dump from a dealer manual as it includes all the updates etc. The document seems to be in less then an orginized order which is why i think it may not be an "officialy released document" yes there are complete schematics
Well, since I am not getting any younger I am taking my Sorrento SX 2016 tomorrow to have its first oil change at the dealer .
It normally cost around $50.00 and includes check of all points and fluids , brakes , tires rotation and sensors adjusting plus oil and filter change , of course ... but at their site there are coupons that you access online , print out and bring with you and end up with a $34.95 bill plus taxes = $37.04
That is not bad at all .
I save a hell of a lot of effort , the buying of the oil and filter (which cost almost $30.00 for both anyway ) I`ll get the tires rotated , which is imperative , along with the adjusting of the sensors and I get the overall check on all the other stuff and fluids on the car . I`ll also get the nitrogen replenished on the tires that are 3 or 4 pounds low already . On top of it all , they wash and vacuum the car for free ...
So, for $37.00 I will let these guys at the Kia dealer to do it .
I would question if you have nitrogen in your tires if they have lost that much air. The advantage of nitrogen over regular air is that it doesn't leak out nearly as fast. My tires on my other ride have N2 and I have yet to refill them in over 20K miles/2 years.
I never take my vechiale to a 10 min oil change seen to many striped drain plugs and leaking oil filters and to much oil. Be safe let dealer do the oil change its not that expensive my dealer has a full synthetic oil change for $38.
