Can anyone with a 14 or 15 sorento tell me if they have engine noise? Start car look under hood and engine is noisy. 6 CYL GDI.
Very worried. ..525 miles on car....
Agree ..dumb of me to not give full explanation. I posted via phone.
Here's the thing. I hear a sort of rattle coming from the engine. It doesn't sound like a sticky valve, but like I say perhaps a rattle. It's tough to describe.
What I was trying to ask originally is are the GDI 6 cyl. engines known for such noises?...I did some internet searching and there are a few references to GDI engines being 'noisy'.
The GDI engine is a bit louder than a lot of engines, especially on cold start up. Does it quiet down a bit at operating temperature? If you are concerned, you could always drop by the service department and inquire.
When my engine is cold, it makes a noise reminding me a little of a diesel engine. It goes away after a few minutes. It could very well be that this is caused by the direct fuel injection, a technology borrowed from diesel engines.
you need to tell us, if this is when the engine is cold (been sitting overnight) or after its reached proper operating temperature?
How long does it last?
Not something I would be overly concerned with that low of mileage, but as we can't hear what you hear, its so hard to tell.
It may also depend what your used to, not all engine sound the same, does not mean there is a problem.
I chuckled a bit because one of the first things the salesman said to me was, "The engine is a bit noisy at startup so don't worry, it's normal." He claimed it was the GDI running it's course which is why it's louder when you start the engine cold. Once you put it in gear, the noise vanishes.
That 'tick' or 'rattle' noise is just a characteristic of a GDI engine. Combustion pressures are higher and according to my training material the centerbore of the piston wristpin is offset from the crankshaft and this also contributes to noise, vibration, and harshness but aides in fuel economy.
Purchased a 2014 Sorento 3.5V6 last year. I took it back to the dealer within 500 miles; cold start noise - sounds like there is no oil in the engine, then it smooths-out within a minute. Apparently the GDI technical lore is true, though the cold start noise is mechanical; and only time will tell on how well the valve train wears. Given all that is said in these forums, about this being OK, it bothers me every time I start the vehicle. . . . and yes, the salesman brought it to me from prep, already warmed-up; so dealers and manufacturers know this is a problem. This is a deceptive industry practice either way; and if that engine has any issues inside my extended warranty, they are going to fix it.
I purchased a new 2014 Sorento SX V6 AWD in 2013 that now has approximately 17k miles.
I love the KIA Sorento! I traded in a 1 yr old 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited on my KIA. Though the Toyota is an excellent car, in my opinion the KIA to be a better product. I’m an engineer by trade and believe that KIA is far superior overall design, available safety and comfort features. What impresses me most about the KIA is the sophisticated level of integration between on board systems. I've had the car almost two years and am still impressed by how KIA engineers anticipated and met their users needs.
Having said that, the GDI engine noise especially at start-up is something I struggle with every time I start the car.
I’m a older car savvy guy who has owned lots of new V6 cars and have done lots of mechanical engine work over the years including boring & building short blocks, re-manufacturing heads and valve systems etc. I don’t claim to know lots about the KIA V6 but I’m researching the reasons I've heard that are used to explain away the noise level of these engines.
With all due respect to KIA and other owners I must say when I start up my KIA I’m embarrassed by the level of metallic sounds it emits. I’ve always let my cars run a little before shifting putting the car into gear. I find myself putting the Sorento in gear the second I’m off the start button to reduce RPM in an effort to mitigate the metallic noises.
Once the engine is up to operating temp and RPM is down the noise level in the car is fine but I still find the outside noise still very frustrating.
The technicians at my dealer assure my car does not have a problem. As I've become acutely aware of this issue I've observed lots of other 2014 or newer KIA Sorentos make the same sounds.
I've owned similar (non-GDI) V6’s from many manufacturers that you can hardly hear including Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, etc. Additionally, I haven’t observed a significant increase in power or mileage with the GDI.
I love our KIA and will buy another new one in a year or so.
Thanks for reading. I just wanted to share another point of view on the subject of V6 engine noise.
I think that the "clattering" of the GDI after cold start has a very similar reason why diesel engine 'clatter" when started from cold. Both type of engines have a very similar direct injection system.
I own a very new John Deere diesel tractor, and when I start this, the clattering sounds almost identical to the one of the Sorento. The only difference is that the JD clatters even louder. This might be, because the fuel is injected directly onto the cold pistons and into the cold cylinders, and the initial "burning" of the fuel is not very good, and it burns in several uncontrolled mini explosions that do not allow for an initial "round" movement of the engine, but in more or less a stuttering operation, and hence the noise.
I had a very similar initial noise with my last (2013) Subaru. With a Subaru everybody attributes the noise to the so called "piston slab" because the pistons run sideways in the cylinders and woble a little during cold start. This is, like with the Sorento, a mechanical kind of nois. It might be that the GDI injections system causes something similar to a piston slab?
Is it just me who don't have a problem with the engine noise its making when cranked from a cold start when its -25C outside? I know engine will run noisier, but not to a point where it sounds like its broken or defective.
Or maybe mine's one of the most perfected batch of engine Kia has built for the 2015 SX
Mine is just noisy for the initial 2 or 3 seconds. Would really remind you of a dry start situation (oil drained away from bearings) in a conventional engine. There is minimal "rattle" after that and I attribute that to the direct injection design. Bottom line is ... it doesn't bother me at all.
