A couple of days ago I was driving down the Interstate at about 80mph when it felt like the car lost power. I pulled over and put the car in park and it had a real rough Idle. Revved it up a bit and it was fine. Drove it another 25 miles to my family's home and once again it started idling rough. I had just filled the car up about 30 miles prior to this.
Check engine light finally came on with a 300,303 and 304. I first checked the coil packs to make sure they had resistance. When I was satisfied they were fine I pulled the plug on 3 and 4 and the tips were burnt and missing a small section. I changed plugs and it didn't change anything.
Any suggestions? The car has 46k miles on it. Problem is where the car is at there is not a Kia dealership within 100 miles.
I agree, sounds like bad fuel for a moderate mileage car to suddenly behave badly after refueling. Happened to my daughter recently - although not as severe.
Have you run fuel system cleaner thru it periodically?
Well I felt it could be bad fuel but wasn't certain. I put a bottle of Heet in the tank and filled the rest of the tank with 91 fuel. Let the car idle for about 15 minutes was still rough but getting better. Took it down the road for about 15 miles came back no rough idle no check engine light and pulling no codes.
I believe that it is not diesel. water is a big issue for diesel. today's diesel engine is very sensitive to water. it won't start engine if water is added into fuel tank. but for petro, it isn't really issue at all. I'm not sure about bad fuel. how the hell gas station sells bad fuel nowadays? as far as I know, quality of gas generally is similar no matter which gas station is. I guess that you should check MAF sensor, and clean. it's related with throttle body and rough idle.
There is a HUGE difference in gas quality here, particularly when purchased from stations that do not sell a lot. Also, water in the gas is quite common and causes issues for cars and motorcycles. The ethanol they put in our fuel actually attracts and retains water. I ride motorcycles and have had "bad" gas several times. Have literally had to drain a tank out to put "fresh" fuel in. I put those few gallons into my truck (5.4l V8) which ran without issue.
Glad your car is running better but I am a little bit worried about the spark plugs: "tips were burnt and missing a small section". Maybe that indicates another problem, sounds like the spark plugs are wearing out prematurely, can you post a photo?
If this is a GDI engine, they are notorious for having carbonized intake valves. Also could be a sign of an injector going bad. I have a 2015 3.3L GDI Sorento, replaced two injector & had BG service at 20,000 miles
