Service at 48K entails an extensive list of inspections over and above the usual oil change.
Aside from risk of voiding the warranty for skipping the inspections, there is risk that an issue may be spotted that needs corrective action.
That in turn creates risk of car breaking down, significant repair costs and even putting safety of those riding in the car at risk.
All cars I have owned have the major checkpoints where do well if nothing is found. I find $500 to be not unreasonable.
It's all part of the cost of car ownership and protecting your investment in a car that cost you >$30K. If you can afford the higher end EX (i.e. higher than the LX levels), then shouldn't be skipping on service.
And also note that since I assume you are in Canada, you very likely drive in conditions requiring service at 6,000 km rather than the 12,000 in the manual. Cold weather is one of the conditions for more frequent service.
This is a quote from Maintenance Services in the Kia Canada website which addresses your question:
"Inadequate, incomplete or insufficient servicing may result in operational problems with your vehicle that could lead to vehicle damage, an accident or personal injury.
Repairs and adjustments required as a result of improper maintenance or a lack of required maintenance are not covered."
