Default Brand new 2013 engine rattle?

I just bought a 2013 LX Sorento last night with a 4 cyl. Today when I started it, the engine had quite a rattle to it for like 30 seconds. I'm guessing till the oil warmed up a bit? Is this normal. There is/was less than 100 miles on it. Will it get better when it's broke in more?

Thanks and Sorry for being such a noob.

Yes, a bit of a rattle is sometimes heard on new engines. Let the engine warm up for about a minute before driving off. The noise is most likely the valve gear, and more of an annoyance than anything else. If it persists, speak to your dealer.

Follow the break-in advice in the handbook and keep an eye on the oil level.

Wry gives some good tips, but no, that's not normal.

If you have the GDI engine, they are significantly noisier, especially when cold. This is because of the high pressure injection pump on top of the engine, similar to a diesel. If this is your scenario, it is probably normal. The best thing to do may be to go back to the dealer and ask to compare it to another with the same engine.

It does have the GDI. It only sounds that way at first. By the time I get to the dealer, it would quit. I never heard it when I bought it, cause it was probably already warmed up. I noticed they had all the Sorentos running. Now I know why lol.

Maybe "they" them running to get the car warm for the customers test drive? I would rather check out a warm car..........

I don't know how many cars/trucks (non KIA) I have had in my lifetime that has never exhibited this noise on cold startup. My dealer tells me it is normal on my 2013 sorento v6, it drives me NUTZ!
I could probably cure this problem with several beers......not for the car.....but for me.

I believe It is typical of most modern engines that in place of tappets/shims in the cam followers they use hydraulic pressure to "adjust" the cam follower spacings. This used to be referred to as self adjusting tappets. So it takes 30 seconds or so for the oil pressure to rise and oil to pressurise the valve gear.

I also have a 2013 V6 and do NOT have any start-up rattle whatsoever. I've got almost 10k miles on it now.

Best,

Best,
Don't know what to think. Either you are not as sensitive to the noise, or I am over sensitive to it, or...some KIA engines (both 4 & 6 cy) have it and others don't. I do not hear it as much when in the car during start up, but when the wife starts it up and we are in the garage, I just cringe.
We have a local radio station here that a master mechanic has a 2 hour call in show every week and he was just going nuts this weekend, that manufacturers (not just KIA) use 5-20w oil instead of 0-30w. He says that 20w oil is just to thin for us southern folks, while 0w gets to the engine quicker on cold start up. My dealer says that they use 5-20 "blend".
