Unhappy 2011 Sorento Smart Key problems

Hello all - I have a 2011 Sorento AWD V6 EX with about 12k miles. Yesterday (Sat) the smart key became dumb. Both fobs did this - I check em. Bottom line is the car won't start. Will unlock/locks the doors but that is it. Lights flash on the fob when buttons are depressed - just no ignition. Put it (smart key fob) in the docking station in the console - nothing. Called 1-800 333 4542 and got towed to the dealer who was able to duplicate the problem - car won't start. (No HID lights either) Svc Manager says they have to wait until Monday as the Kia picinic is this weekend. Then on Monday Kia will teleport or mid-meld - or Webex (whatever) into my Sorento and continue troubleshooting the issue. Dealer hooked me up with an alt ride -a Soul? Driving the box (Soul) is different than my EX for sure - but my daughter likes the Orange color and racing stripe. LOL. Crap - I hope I am not in for a long term experience like Mr Butkus had :-( The tow truck driver interestingly enough said he thought it was the starter? Curious?

Off the start I don't think it's the fobs. When you press the Start button are there any "clicks"? Do any of the accessories come on, like the radio?

Might be the brake switch, there were a bunch of bad ones over at the Hyundai forum.

I've seen a few. And recently, too.

Yea - all the accessories come on with the key fob - dealer is supposed to let me know something on Mon. They were able to duplicate the problems. Meanwhile I am drving around a Soul. A buzzzy little box - !

Default push to start

Hopefully.. not the problem I had >>>>>

The "alternate" to pressing the brake is to hold the "push" button for 15 seconds to start the car.

Is that in the owners manual? Pushing the button with no brake? Cool.

Default smart key - brake switch

Dealer called today and reported that the Sorento had a bad brake light switch. Part on order - could take a day or two? That seems like a long time when you can overnight stuff with Fedex. Do they still have tha big plant in GA? Where are all the brake light switches - they must be using a boatload of them to be out of stock in the entire DC area ???

My '11 Sorento is back in the shop today for a 3rd time with this no start issue.

1st time, they replaced the brake switch (I got about 10k miles out of it)
2nd time, replaced battery, which worked fine until the next day and then wouldn't start three other times.

I mentioned the brake switch when I took it in the 2nd time but they checked the battery and it was bad (uh, maybe because I had to keep using the 15 sec hold and start method, thus discharging the battery?). The battery may have fixed the issue for them for a moment, but when it fails the next morning... I'm thinking brake switch.

I mentioned the brake switch again this morning, but was told they already replaced it... well, it could go bad again. From what I've read in other posts - and here as well - brake switch, that's the issue - in Kia's and Hyundai's.

Also, I've got an issue when I start the car the a/c doesn't keep its memory setting. What I mean is that the a/c display shows it's blowing on directly the driver but the air is actually blowing on my feet. Intermittent but strange behavior. Anyway, that's another post...

It will be interesting to see how they fix the no start issue today.

UPDATE: As I suspected - Brake switch needs replaced and it happens to be on Kia's National Backorder list! Nice!
